Bigger choke than the 99 semifinal imo. Some of those shots from wi towards the end were dreadful.
Yeah, I think it's underrated how much they lost their nerve in the final closing overs, not just in their shots but in their tactics; why on earth were Harper & Gibson coming in ahead of nominal batsmen Adams & Arthurton when the run rate wasn't an issue? And even if he hadn't been run out, Richardson going for the run in the final over and make the tail have to get the runs was just madness.

It was interesting rewatching the highlights and even when the West Indies were comfortably on top the TV comms noting an air of panic in the way they were playing.

Think 2003 is underrated here by many. For one thing, unlike in 2007 Australia were challenged in multiple matches (in big trouble against Pakistan for the first 20-25 overs of their innings, on the ropes due to Shane Bond v NZ, squeaked out of jail v England. Even at the half-way mark of their semi-final it was still anybody's game).

My rankings: 1999, 1996, 2003, 1992, 2011, 2015, 2007.

Hard to argue with 1999 being ranked number 1, even allowing for the lame final. Maybe 1992 is worth a shout as the final was a decent content, which hasn't often been the case. My personal favourite will probably always be 1975 four all sorts of subjective reasons.

1999 - best world cup for sheer number of high quality matches, very exciting too (such an anti-climactic final though), great uniforms and great balance between bat and ball in general
1992 - really was a spectacle, huge grounds, colored clothing, great uniforms, some ATG at the end of their careers (imran, border, marshall, kapil, botham), new gen coming into their own (tendulkar, wasim, ambrose, donald), had a great song as well

2015 - pretty good world cup in general, some great matches to remember, not a great final of course
1996 - quite memorable because of the way SL played, also a great WI-Aus semi-final ensured that the tournament would sitck in memory
1987 - A fairly good world cup with good semis kicking out the favs and the closest world cup final we have ever witnessed.

Surely 1992 is the runaway winner. Epic uniforms, iconic cricketers at their peak, iconic moments (the 26 off 1 ball game, Imran Khan, Martin Crowe's 100 in the tournament opener), killer soundtrack and most importantly a good final.

1983 and 2011 are the only world cups in which the favorites at the half way stage of the final ended up losing the match. These 2 WCs should be right up there for this reason alone.

Most of the time the semi finals have been the best matches to watch.

All world cups were awesome before T20 cricket began, batsmen then mostly were skill based than power based. So big hitters were rare like Jayasuria and Afridi. You also got to see backfoot drives in ODIs from the pre T20 era games which is pretty much extinct from LOIs today.

Bat technology reached a point where sheer muscular power began to overtake skill in LO cricket. It mostly happened after around 2008ish. It's a pretty fine thing though. Most of the hitters before then were classically good batsmen first and hitters second.

I forgot to add that the amount of cricket we play today is too much. Before franchise based cricket most budding Indian cricketers in Ranji teams dreamed of playing the World Cup, that was the biggest motivation that got them to play the sport itself. Now with big pay from franchise based cricket, the World Cup has lost it's allure.

Think it's already better than 2015 as a spectacle. Bangladesh-SA, Bangladesh-NZ, Pakistan-England, Australia-WI, Afghanistan-SL have all been tight and well fought games, which already beats 2015's total output from what I can remember.
