India crumble to enormous defeat
Day 5 - Cricket Web XI v India at PDV Dome

Thamba Mamesh sizzled to hurry a 10-wicket win for Cricket Web XI in the first Test. The Webhead bowlers pulled together in the morning session and restricted India to 234 all out and a lead of 31. Young Nick Borcich added to a hugely impressive Test match return, bowling Tendulkar for 16 after the batsman raced away against the medium pace of Collins. Tendulkar had dispatched Collins for two fours and a six down the ground, but was beaten by the pace of Borcich and saw his stumps dismantled.


Borcich knocked over Tendulkar.

Dhoni replaced him and edged Borcich to the third man boundary and then played and missed twice before he played around a quick yorker. Borcich celebrated his 5th wicket of the match in excited fashion, then congratulated Demeza for the wicket of Ganguly (23) a over later. Kumble nicked the next ball to Mork and survived, but was not yet off the mark when Pickup dealt for his opposite number once again. India led by 5 runs with 2 wickets intact but fought on with some luck to the second session.

Collins ended the innings with the wicket of Pathan (31) and was stranded a wicket short of a 5-for. His efforts were still central in setting up the game for CW XI. The home side chased 32 and knocked off the runs in 41 balls, staying true to their spirited ODI showing. It was the most fitting end as Mamesh crashed Ganguly over square leg for six.

Spirited youngsters push Indians
Indians vs Cricket Web Under-19 @ Casston Reserve

Bosco Fitzsimmons and Liam Howgate played some dashing shots and livened up the fourth day, as Cricket Web Under-19 gave an excellent account of themselves against the touring Indians. The youngsters played positively in a partnership of 78, and briefly threatened to complete an improbable chase of 403 for victory. In the end Harbhajan Singh retreated to one-day tactics and prevented Indian embarrassment by holding the hosts to a draw.

The game started in positive fashion for the young Webheads, when they asked the Indians to bat first and pulled them back from a 78-run opening stand with 4 wickets for 71 runs. Ethan McNamara was the clear pick of the bowlers, trapping Sachin Tendulkar lbw late in the day, out for a top score of 75. He followed up with the wicket of Yuvraj Singh (34) early on day two, but from 297-7 the Indians took advantage of some sloppy fielding to push on to 379 all out. Harbhajan Singh was dropped thrice in an innings of 27, while Anil Kumble scored a composed 47 to hold his team together.

After the Indians' fine recovery, Ishant Sharma threatened the ideal start with the ball. Had Karthik held on behind the stumps, he would have dismissed Rob Malone Jr. with his 5th ball. Instead the Under-19s raced away to 43 runs within 10 overs. But just as the home side looked to be on top, Irfan Pathan entered the mix and tore through the top order with a 3-wicket burst, interrupted by the tea break. The middle order tried to recover, but when Sharma snapped up Stephen Young for 42, the Indians surged to the advantage with the score 159-5 at stumps.

The following day Pathan pressed his Test claims further by completing a 5-wicket haul. Fitzsimmons was the lone hand of resistance, hitting 2 sixes and 5 fours in a compact knock of 55. But the Under-19s were all out for 217 and well short of the follow-on target. Fast bowler Sreesanth lit up the innings end with a hat-trick, starting with a lifter to remove Fitzsimmons, then quickly dismissing Sriram and McNamara. Kumble chose to bat again, and after the openers failed, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were united. Laxman, who earned a promotion to find some form, wasted no time in advancing, striking the ball down the ground for 3 runs first up.

He serenely strolled past 50 and was joined by Dravid, on the other side of tea. The Under-19 bowlers struggled to maintain discipline against an impressive mix of caution and attack, and in the 66th over of the innings, Laxman drove Sriram to the boundary and achieved his ton. As the lead ticked past 400 with another four, Kumble declared the innings closed. The Indian bowlers then fired 5 overs at the young openers, but could not procure a breakthrough. The Under-19s resumed on the final day needing 390 to win, and through most of the day the huge target looked possible due to the brave batting of Ashley Arnold.

The opening batsman scored 98 off 138 balls, but was victim to the again impressive Pathan. When Ritchie was stumped by Karthik off Kumble in the final session, it seemed the Indians had another opening. Kumble should have caught Fitzsimmons when he had 30, but missed a simple return chance and offered a lifeline that was gleefully accepted. Fitzsimmons looked at total ease from then on, though Howgate was missed at slip when he had 14. In the end the two batted the game to safety, playing many attractive shots along the way and greatly enhancing their reputations.

a shame we didnt win, but happy to put in a good show against a test team, happy with my individual performances.
