Australian test selection 2018/19

Maybe Australia should do the right thing by world cricket, just announce Maxwell is never going to play for Australian test team, no matter how well he plays or how many runs he gets.
ICC can then allow a minnow to select him, (must have some Irish blood somewhere in his family history) and it helps develop cricket in that country with a big name player.

I'd like to see something along the lines of

Renshaw
?
Khawaja
Ferguson
?
Maxwell

Where Finch either opens or is at 5 and if the latter maybe Burns opens, though I still have scars from his last go. Head might be acceptable at 5 or 6 if Finch opens.
I think it's actually going to be Marshes all the way down, no Maxwell and likely no Renshaw.

for mine. But a lot will ride on the performances from the first few Shield rounds. I get the feeling Finch and Khawaja are the only certainties at this stage. (I say Finch is a certainty because he'll be playing with the ODI/T20 team and won't have a chance to **** up in the Shield to get himself dropped)

Warne thinks this should be the test side:

Finch (c)
Renshaw
Khawaja
Head
Maxwell
Paine (wk)
Stoinis
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

Finch captain, Carey in at 6, Agar batting 7 would presumably make you hate it though.
Did it start out like the XI you posted and finish up like Burgeys? I know Stoinis record has been horrible, but when he is up against MMarsh..

I don't follow Warne on Twitter so I never actually saw the Burgey version. I just got sent the version I posted. I suspect he may have made a few chances as the criticisms came in though.

I don't think anything that happens in the UAE will affect selections for the next home test. The marshes are locks till they repeatedly fail at home in prime viewing. Only Head and Marnus are vulnerable to a shield bat piling up runs. Which still won't help Renshaw. They can still say he's a specialist and have him wait behind Uzi and Arun. Expecting mega flat decks to make our batting look better, as usual.

I dont hate this XI at all. Actually makes a fair bit of sense.

I’ve got a real issue with Finch opening at home, even against India. But I do think he should be in the side atm. Given I also want Khawaja at three, we need two openers. One is Renshaw but the other is problematic tstl.

Renshaw
?
Khawaja
Head (also problematic imo but as worthy of a spot after the first test as most going around atm)
Finch
Maxwell
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Lyon

is probably the best I can come up with. I think Stoinis’ bowling is trashier than either of the other all rounders and iirc his FC stats are even worse than theirs.

Finch and Maxwell at five and six could do some serious damage at home.

The other option is someone like Ferguson or whoever has a big Shield start to the season bats four in place of Head. But I suspect Maxwell won’t get a game and MMarsh will bat six

Yeah I think Burns as well, primarily given he was the incumbent and top scored last innings he played, but it’s really going to come down to who scores heavy in the Shield. Be a good time for Dan Hughes to start scoring big tons.
