He opened regularly for England for several years prior to WWI, and along with Jack Hobbs, formed the most successful pre war opening partnership in Tests. Their opening partnerships yielded 2,146 runs at a brilliant average of 61.31, including the then world record Test match opening partnership of 323 at Melbourne in 1912.
