Update December 30 2018
India 117.34
South Africa 115.87
England 112.53
New Zealand 109.58
Australia 107.15
Pakistan 99.34
Sri Lanka 98.17
West Indies 84.44

Once again a new highest-ever rating for New Zealand. South Africa can overtake India for the top spot if they win the second test against Pakistan and India lose the final test against Australia.

Update 28 February 2019

India 117.00
South Africa 113.02
Australia 110.41
New Zealand 109.58
England 109.25
Sri Lanka 100.73
Pakistan 96.01
West Indies 88.70
Bangladesh 82.50
Zimbabwe 66.95

New Zealand are not quite as highly rated on my system as on the official ICC ratings. I don't think New Zealand has proven themselves yet against quality opposition recently in order to be truly rated in the top 2. My system is based on the formula ((rating before match*24+match result*1)/25). Match points are 150 for a win, 100 for a draw, and 50 for a loss. These match points are adjusted based on home/neutral/away and quality of opposition.

My system takes into account every match from 1877, instead of only basing it on the previous five years results. Thus changes are slower and smoother over time.

New Zealand has achieved 2nd place in my ratings once before, for a very brief period, from March 15 to March 17 1987:

March 15 1987
West Indies 125.45
New Zealand 105.49
Pakistan 105.32 (Pakistan then went on to beat India in the 5th test of their series to assume 2nd place)
India 100.77
England 94.33
Australia 93.88
Sri Lanka 78.27

However, the current New Zealand team is the best in terms of its rating, if not its world ranking.

Update 16 January 2020

India 124.83
Australia 118.09
England 107.87
New Zealand 106.37
South Africa 106.36
Sri Lanka 99.03
Pakistan 95.46
West Indies 88.15
Bangladesh 77.36
Zimbabwe 66.95

India has improved their rating whilst Australia have moved into a clear 2nd place after demolishing Pakistan and New Zealand. There is a dogfight between England, New Zealand and South Africa for 3rd.

Teams rated as 100.00 or above are counted as "quality opposition" in my batsmen and bowler ratings.

New Zealand did achieve 2nd in the world ratings on my system after they beat England in the first test at Mount Maunganui. They also achieved their highest ever rating. They lost 2nd after drawing with England whilst Australia beat Pakistan.

I doubt if the current New Zealand team can ever achieve such a high rating again.

Not Terrible
I wouldn't be terribly surprised if we beat up India at home honestly. Touring NZ has been rough recently.

If NZ beat India, the series next summer will be for the number 1 ranking in DoG's system.

Thought we'd have been boosted more by the huge gap between us.
Unlike the ICC ratings, my system isn't based on gaps between sides. Instead a team's performance is adjusted by the rating of the opposition along with where the match is played (home or away).

That may well be true. Who do India and Australia play in the meantime? Do India get to bully anyone at home or do Australia have to travel to the subcontinent and collectively forget how to play spin?

Australia are touring Bangladesh for two tests and I don't believe that India play any other tests.

Is the Bangladesh tour part of the test championship? Aren't there some series which don't count, for some reason?

Not much test cricket around for India and Australia til next summer here then. At least everyone should be fresh.

Expecting rain to keep it to 1-0 for the home side?
No. India are pretty formidable away now, especially with their much improved attack. Of course question marks imo still remain among their batting lineup....
