The difference between Shield and BBL can be, off the top of my head, measured in tens of thousands. You'd think more people would go to Shield games for the quality of cricket or whatever (less so than the incredible quality of players in the late 90s and early 2000s) but there are more reasons than that. A lot of which is to do with timing.

Yes and after a review they decided franchise would be better. And it's been great guns ever since.
What I mean to say is, didn't the original Twenty20 (2005 -11) competition consist of the state teams - given wacky names and garish colours no doubt, but still the state teams which also compete in the Shield and Matador. This is what I mean,

Is it also not correct that a similar T20 league was formed, the Indian Cricket League, which the BCCI eradicated through wage hikes and pressure on international boards to penalise players for joining. I think Kapil Dev was also sacked from some position for involvement in its organisation.

Then the BCCI promptly formed their own identical league: the IPL.

No, it was fairly conventional iirc and they used the same uniforms as the List A tournament, etc. Then they revamped it into the BBL with city teams instead.

These are things that happened and not sure what you're trying to say now tbh.

I don't agree, but I see I'm in the minority here so we may as well leave it.
I agree with you. I tolerate the fact that the IPL exists and it is surely a good thing that more cricketers can make a good living out of it without being selected for their country, but don't ever expect me to like it. Have gone off it in a big way in the past few seasons.

I don't really like the IPL, but love the Big Bash. Not nearly as vulgar in terms of its commercialism and has a great light-hearted summer party vibe in terms of its marketing and commentary.

i want to hear kennedy's thoughts on a potential city based, english t20 comp.
Dreadful idea.

The reason the Bash is successful is it is on free-to-air Oz TV and has reasonable ticket prices. You know what will happen with an English variant? The ECB running things? Paywalled by Sky or BT and absurd prices. If you want to boost cricket here you do not need to create an entire new competition but merely remove some of our current domestic cricket out from behind subscription and put some of it on free tv, and lower the ticket pricing. 20 plus quid is ridiculous for a T20.

What other arguments are there for an English version? More bums on seats. The London clubs, Taunton, Canterbury. Northants, etc. regularly sell out in advance already, so how are you going to possibly fit more spectators into these venues. The current Blast is actually rather successful. Durham is meant to be one of the poorer sellers yet I've seen it packed. We do not have your big MCGs or Eden Gardens in this country. Lord's is the largest capacity, at 30,000. (Unless they're serious about hiring out venues like the Olympic Stadium and using drop in pitches).

More glitzy players arriving? Doesn't Gayle go to Somerset? I remember Finch and Maxwell in the Blast. Kane Williamson at Yorkshire. A (young) Davey Warner at Durham. I've seen Bravo, Russell, KP and Sanga (Surrey) - all those mercenaries - play The Blast already. Even with the franchised teams, they have an overseas cap which is somewhat similar to the Blast's cap, so it is not as if you could fit in any more overseas players.

Then you have the fact that the ECB will have to risk the ire of the counties, producing something which sits akwardly with local loyalties: ''will a Headingley franchise be called 'Leeds', thus alienating people from Sheffield, Bradford?'' Likewise 'Manchester' and Liverpool, Bolton etc.

England is not Australia or India. We are attached to our local regional loyalties and ancient sporting teams. You cannot just create plastic teams and expect to find an instant fanbase.

Yeah a large part of the BBL is the prices.. Read somewhere that they were committed to keeping the prices low till the time the largest venues like the MCG were being consistently sold out.
