Batting for a draw XI's

If you base the team on the highest 4th innings averages and apply a cut-off of 12 innings (Bradman played 12 x 4th innings and I really want to include him) then you get;

01. Bruce Mitchell - 89.85
02. Conrad Hunte - 61.00
03, Don Bradman - 73.40
04. Virat Kohli - 60.81
05. Younis Khan - 59.17
06. Angelo Matthews - 69.37
07. Mushfiqar Rahim + - 40.33
08. Imran Khan - 37.66
09. Daniel Vettori - 32.25
10. Richard Hadlee - 29.00
11. Mitchell Johnson - 37.66

If you increase the cut-off to 20 innings for the batsman and keeper only then you get;

01. Geoff Boycott - 58.76
02. Sunil Gavaskar - 58.25
03. Younis Khan - 59.17
04. Javed Miandad - 54.40
05. Misbah-ul-Haq - 58.00
06. Ricky Ponting - 50.41
07. Denesh Ramdin + - 30. 76
08. Imran Khan - 37.66
09. Daniel Vettori - 32.25
10. Richard Hadlee - 29.00
11. Mitchell Johnson - 37.66

Note: The only bowlers to have batted at least 20 times in the 4th innings are Vettori, Hadlee, Kumble, Walsh, and Anderson - so have kept the bowlers as they were.

If you want to go for the more obvious keeper-batsman then the choices are;

Matt Prior - 39.07 (17 innings)
Alan Knott - 36.57 (18 innings)
Moin Khan - 35.90 (14 innings)
Adam Gilchrist - 35.40 (15 innings)
MS Dhoni - 30.64 (20 innings)

So including Knott to give the team a more ATG feel, my turning track 4th innings specialist team would be;

01. Geoff Boycott - 58.76
02. Sunil Gavaskar - 58.25
03. Don Bradman - 73.40
04. Javed Miandad - 54.40
05. Virat Kohli - 60.81
06. Younis Khan - 59.17
07. Alan Knott - 36.57
08. Imran Khan - 37.66
09. Daniel Vettori - 32.25
10. Richard Hadlee - 29.00
11. Mitchell Johnson - 37.66

Bruce Mitchell unlucky because has the highest 4th innings average ever, and because he was a fabulous blocker. However, I can't go past the Boycott / Gavaskar combination.which speaks for itself.

Thorpe over Bell worth considering?

Good shout on Hoggard though, was wondering when he would show up here.
Did think about Thorpe, couldn't think of a long innings he played to save a match though. I may be wrong as I was pretty young in the nineties.

I remember Bell playing a very long innings in one of the South Africa draws in the 09/10 series which is the only reason I chose him.

I forgot about Onions, shame on me

I would be confident with this lot

1.Bill "Unbowlable" Woodfull
2. Alec "Strokeless" Bannerman
3. Bradman - because he could bat all day
4. Bill Ponsford - ditto
5.Bob Cowper - a 300 in just how many days ?
6.K."Slasha" Mackay- because he wasnt (see 60/61 WI series)
7.Billy Murdoch
8.George Giffin
9. Greg Matthews
10. J.Gillespie
11.Lindsay Kline - (see 60/61 WI series)

you'd want to base it on fourth innings balls faced though wouldn't you?

it might not change much but still

Taylor has played some pretty long innings. Perth for example, even if the S/R was 77.

This post needs to be printed and framed, then it will go straight to the pool room. First time I've been named in a NZ team. The grandkids are going to hear about this one day! I'm not even batting 11!
