Lol at all these people saying Harmison was crap before that 7-12.
There's plenty still saying it - and they will continue to do so for at least the next 12 months.

Actually, if that fires him up, that's a good thing. Time to start doing DD's 'Steve Harmison's Diary' again, possibly?

Maybe I'll have to consider it my patriotic duty.

Hmm, maybe we were saying he was crap for a reason? Because largely beforehand he was bowling the biggest load of dross an England player has ever bowled since Nasser Hussain bowled in Durban...

He's gone and improved, well well Id eat my hat if it wasn't in the garage...

My All-time England XI

Jack Hobbs
Len Hutton
Walter Hammond
David Gower
Ken Barrington
+Les Ames
Ian Botham
Hedley Verity
Fred Trueman
George Lohmann
Sydney Barnes

-------------------------

Think this is a balanced team. Wicketkeeper position is really the only position I thought over for a long period of time, decided to go with Ames because his record is quite brilliant. Could get into the team on his batting credentials alone but his Keeping record is also quite extraodinary. I would even consider bringing Tich Freeman into the side in place of Verity due to Ames' partnership and understanding with Tich.

Very strong top 6 with a world class all-rounder coming in at 7. Also a very accomplished tail with Verity, Trueman and Lohmann all having a First-Class Century under their belts.

Bowling wise we have 4 Top-notch Fast Bowlers in Trueman, Barnes, Lohmann and Botham with Verity, who I think is the best spinner England has ever produced and would have gone on to acheive great things for England had the war not intervened. We also have Hammond providing some bowling and Barrington could put his much underated Leg-Spin into practise.

Blimey, never realised he had that good a record - it shocked me to see someone not in a League for the Ages being talked about, but I can see why!

Thank God Hasley never saw him...

Your point being??
Gower was one of the best strokeplayers that England have ever had and although Lohmann didn't have the longest of careers, well, look at his stats. I know that stats shouldn't be the only basis of judgement but in his case they are quite special.
Just because you don't agree with the selection doesn't mean it's wrong.

Yeah, totally agree twctopcat. I think it's very much a personal thing and, in my opinion, that would be my All-Time England XI. Obviously people are going to disagree and have their own opinions.

I will go with that. Yes he has improved a helluva lot. He is no Larwood though :p

Oh well. Here's my current one. It'll be different next month, probably.

Hutton (c)
Hobbs
Hammond
Compton
May
Botham
Rhodes
Trueman
Laker
Andrew
Barnes

I think that with the top order's strength, we can afford to pick the best possible wicketkeeper, the one whom Evans kept out by being a better batsman.

Cheers,

Mike

One of the finest selections one has seen here. Fantastic to select Andrew.
Great side though bowling could be strengthened by bringing one specialist to replace either of the two all rounders.

Still a superb side.
