I've always been surprised at the vitriol Indian fans seem to generally have for Dhoni. Sometimes I'd wish the selectors would listen to them and get rid of him. Coz whenever he's played against us he delivers more often than not. Another great effort from MSD and starting to make those betting odds look pretty accurate.

Just checked bowling speeds on hawkeye and it shows Patto's and Sid's bowling speeds rending down and Lyon's going up. A long day with fatigue working on the 1st 2 and Lyon losing his confidence.

Delivers more often than not vs. Australia?

He's no better or worse against Australia than most other teams really. Which isn't a bad thing, he holds his own. But he definitely is not very good vs. Australia or anything.

Unless you're including ODI cricket?

I am. But I'll go check his test record as he's given me that impression. And if he's the same against all other countries then I think he's pretty special.

As a qualifier I'll mention I didn't see the last Ind Oz series in Oz. I was in the US at the time and couldn't watch any game time.

You missed an utter ass kicking. But Dhoni wasn't THAT bad compared to the other batsmen (Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag, Gambhir all sucked major balls). But he wasn't anything special.

Dhoni before this test had an ordinary record vs. Australia. But his record is ordinary overall (and I am using ordinary in the true meaning of the word - not bad, just okay.) so he's not more poor against Aust than any other country.

Yes I've just checked his record and its better than just ok. From my recollections he's a guy who wins the moments by batting his side into a winning position (as he's done here) or through his captaincy in the field. He's a player I worry about and respect and always feel much better when he's been disposed of.

Not going to bag your view, but I think its fair to say your view of Dhoni's test batting and test captaincy is contrary to most people here - both Indian and non-Indian.

Then again you acknowledged as much in your first post, where you said you were surprised at how much criticism he gets. So fair enough.

I was a huge Dhoni captaincy fan in from 2008-2010. I stopped being a big fan in the third test in SA in 2010/2011 where I felt he cost us a huge series win, and now I have a weird love/hate relationship with him. Probably more hate tbf, but I acknowledge what he has done for Indian cricket. Just can't see how anyone can preside over 0-4 0-4 away and then 1-2 at home and still keep their leadership position. I don't think there is any profession/occupation in the world where a President/CEO/Captain would keep their spot with such results.

But anyway, good on him. His last two tests have been very very good.

India out to make Australia pay for surprise selection

Australia entered the Test with three fast bowlers – James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc – in their line-up, as well as a seam-bowling all-rounder, Moises Henriques, shunning a specialist back-up for Nathan Lyon in spin-friendly conditions. A radical selection for subcontinent conditions, it has not proved a successful one to date.

It also left India with raised eyebrows. Kohli, who added to Australia’s pain on Sunday with 107, said India were taken aback by the make-up of the visitors’ XI. Thirteen of the 18 wickets so far in Chennai have fallen as a result of spin despite Australia’s seam-heavy attack and Kohli believes a dusty red soil pitch will favour them even more on the final two days.

"Yeah all of us were a bit surprised by that decision," Kohli said of the Australian selection. "They had Xavier (Doherty) in the team as well so we really thought he was going to play this game and we were really surprised to see three seamers in their squad which was a good thing for us on that wicket.

This. Utterly dumb and cowardly Dhoni was, that day. I was really surprised he didnt really get much flak for it.

...and quite a few games before that. Personally I couldn't understand why we persisted with Pontimg so long as he looked a shot bird fora number of years. Excepting that Indian series curiously enough. So I think alot of people have been forgiven for doing as bad as Dhoni's form drop.

Those series losses were bad but getting rid of the CEO in those circumstances would only be cosmetic as a no. of players probably deserved cleaning out too. At 31 or 32 Dhoni still has a contribution to make and while I'm not innocent of the fact the Indian board often makes decisions based on someone's influence rather than their cricket, think they might have got the right outcome in persisting with him.

I know its a comment after the event but I genuinely worried that they could get away from us when the scores were close and he was still in.

Dhoni is an excellent example of the pros and cons of giving a strong leader absolute support.

He has been an excellent captain at times. He has faith in his players, he gives them confidence, he has been known to set innovative fields, he is clear in his instruction, he is not afraid to make his opinion known, and he is all too happy to take the responsibility on his shoulders.

I remember one particular CSK game where he got the best performance out of Tim Southee, who up until that point had not been a very mediocre LO bowler. Each ball in the final over he gave him clear instructions on where he wanted him to bowl. The decision-making was taken away from Southee and as such the pressure came right off and he delivered.

Unfortunately, this willingness to shoulder the responsibility has also been his weakness. He should not have been given as much veto rights in selection as he has. His faith in players like Ishant Sharma has not been re-paid, and he does not have the capacity to see that and instead maintains high expectations of a player who has repeatedly failed to deliver.

The solution should be to take some of his power away, especially regarding selections, and develop more of a leadership group around him.

This is in contrast with the Ross Taylor scenario, in which he was basically given no power or say whatsoever and hence could not possibly lead the team. We will never know whether Taylor did actually have the makings of a captain or not, because he was never really given the captaincy.

I had to crash after the first session. How was Lyon today. Looks like Dhoni slapped him around.
