The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Aus Intimidators XI
1 Hayden
2 Warner
3 Bradman
4 Ponting
5 S Waugh
6 Miller
7 Gilchrist
8 M Johnson
9 Lillee
10 Thomson
11 Spofforth

Thomson and Johnson both are obvious inclusions, Lillee was also fearsome. Spofforth got the nickname Demon. Miller always the bowlers to keep up the relentless attack.
Hayden and Warner are the most attacking openers for Australia. S Waugh is in for his intimidating leader on the field with mental disintegration.

All-time South Africa Test XI

GC Smith (c)
B Mitchell
JH Kallis
RG Pollock
AB de Villiers
AD Nourse
MV Boucher (wk)
HJ Tayfield
DW Steyn
KJ Rabada
AA Donald

Pollock and Rabada is the big debating point for me. Pollock of course would strengthen the tail but he was a new-ball bowler, whereas Rabada is more penetrative coming on at first change.

Rabadas career has lasted by time only as long as Procter's. Procter had an extra decade of top performance as well, if not at the test level. Plus the batting. Can't see how to get rabada in.

Your change bowler argument makes sense. Probably open with Pollock a lot of the time. If the ball isnt swinging he's the best of the three anyway. Bowling to lefties he's better than Steyn. Steyn and donald both needed their radars off a fairly high proportion of the time. Would give him the new ball pretty often irrespective of the change issue.

SA XI is generally quite hard. So many contenders who can still push for a place: Faulkner, Procter, Philander, B. Richards, Rice etc.

Sad to see how Amla's painful decline has meant he's not quite in the conversation for that xi, a few years ago I was of the opinion that up to that point he'd had a superior career to de villiers.

Peak Amla (2010-2013) was probably the best Test batsman across the world in all conditions and vs. a variety of opposition. Played a number of series defining knocks, more so than Kallis, Smith and De Villiers in that period. His peak didn't last long enough unfortunately but it was a great one.

That sa mid late 2000s team was unreal. If kp would have played for them their top 6 could have included Smith, Abdv, amla, kallis, and kp

A bit sad to see Pollock miss out from ATG SA XIs. A bowling average of 23 and batting average of 32 is immense. He should easily get in ahead of at least Rabada for now. Peak Pollock was averaging 20 with the ball after 300 scalps.
He is a greater cricketer than Steyn and Donald for me.

Kallis plays as a specialist bat and Faulkner comes in as an all rounder for me. Not sure if AB displaces Nourse.

Can swap donald/steyn + a bat for Pollock + Procter/Faulkner/Goddard without hurting the batting. Adds a ton of variety to the bowling
