****, that’s a ridiculous team. Five quality bowling options and batting down to 11. Refection of what was arguably the strongest quality era in cricket history.

Hilariously long tail with Anderson in there so I went for another pace-bowling allrounder.

This team will get crushed by the other one in swinging countries. Top and middle is really strong in SC and AUS, but no good in England/RSA. Only one top swing bowler.

Some question marks on longevity in the time period. Lara, Pollock and Smith each only managed 4 or so good years in the time period.

Look at McGrath's record in South Africa and England. He really didn't need to swing it.

Agree that Sehwag/Hayden is dodgy in seam-friendly conditions though. Hence why Smith should be there. Don't agree so much about the middle order though.

I'd have Smith over Sehwag too. I think he'd compliment Hayden very nicely at the top of the order.

As for the bowling attack I'd take Pollock over Anderson as the third seamer for his batting. Another option would be someone like Rabada, but his career isn't that long. Philander might work too and he can hold a bat.

Any side that had McGrath and Murali needs a strong 8 and 9. Steyn is one. Johnson might actually work well in this position too, though he could be torn apart by the batsmen if he's having an off day. Maybe that's not so much of an issue with Murali to bowl a lot of overs and Kallis as the 4th seamer.

I figure Tendulkar can't be playing in both the 90s team and the 00s team but he'd be in ahead of Sangakkara.

Johnson only works because of Kallis and Murali. Picking him is a bit like picking Botham - he could be puss or he could be a wrecking ball.

If you want to pick based on bowling average you don't have much choice this century - McGrath, Steyn, Philander and Rabada are the only ones to have averaged under 25 and taken 150+ wickets this century.

Rather not a Mcgrath/Pollock combo. Bit ineffective if it isn't seaming.

Middle order doesn't have the extent of problems the openers do, but everyone has a bit of a weakness in swinging conditions.

Small problems end up compounding.
