Good side, although decent argument for Hick > Collingwood (and batting 1 up ahead of Flintoff.) Has an excellent record for the era in which he played & not sure there'd be too many overs for a 6th bowler with that attack, but Hick was more than useful as a second spinner if required.

this xi has got pretty much everything.

greenidge
haynes

lara
pietersen
lloyd (c)
flintoff
swann
holding

garner
Hashim Amla
Glenn Turner
Kane Williamson
Jacques Kallis
AB de Villiers * +
Chris Cairns
Shaun Pollock
Lance Klusener
Daniel Vettori
Richard Hadlee
Allan Donald

Interesting head to head battles. I would say the openers are about even. Richards & Lara > Williamson & Kallis at 3 & 4. AB > Pietersen @ 5 & although Lloyd was a better bat than Cairns at 6, Pollock, Klusener, Vettori and Hadlee is much superior 7-10 than Flintoff, Swann, Hodling & Roberts (long tail).

In terms of pure ODI bowling, Garner is arguably the best bowler from both sides, but Hadlee, Donald & Pollock were all individually better ODI bowlers than Holding, Roberts & Flintoff imo and Vettori > Swann as a one day bowler. NZ/SA then have Kallis and Cairns bowling as bonus territory.

So close overall.

All-time SA test side (first I've done since 2010 which now includes AB & Steyn)

If AB keeps, the side has an incredible bowling attack with two class spinners in Tayfield & Faulkner, or alternatively you pick Boucher as a specialist keeper batting at 7-8 & drop Tayfield.

Graeme Smith (c)
Jacques Kallis
Graeme Pollock
AB de Villiers (wk)
Aubrey Faulkner
Shaun Pollock
Mike Procter
Hugh Tayfield

Can't fault this side tbh. Would not think about dropping AB for Boucher. Ridiculous bowling depth.

The flexibility available with the SA ATG side has to be the most of any nations. Heaps of possible combinations, and adaptable to all conditions.

Want heaps of batting, two spinners with a gun keeper? (and still keep 2 quicks plus Kallis)…easy...

Want an all out pace assault that would rival the WIs….easy…Donald, Steyn, Procter, Pollock, Kallis….plus a ridiculously long batting line up….

Nice sides, even if you may be slightly overrating Sidebum.

Who wins a hypothetical test series between these two teams?

Indeed, to think the likes of Peter Pollock and Neil Adcock don't even get a mention.

Best Asian test XI I've seen this. I know many would have Sehwag > Mohammad as opener, but I think you've nailed it.

If you could only have one of Sangakkara or Dravid to bat at #3, and neither of them would keep wickets, who would you choose?

5 years ago I would have said Dravid, but Sanga reasonably comfortably considering what he's achieved in the last 5-6 years, and of course his record playing as a stand-alone batsman is almost freakish. Averaging around 70 IIRC.
