I think for sure England is 4th and S.A is 3rd with the top two very close. The winner for mine will be who wins the contests of Marshall and co vs Bradman and Warne vs Sobers and Lara and Co.

Marshall vs Bradman and Warne vs Sobers. Can there be better match ups?
    Aus. XI
    Simpson^ | Hayden | Bradman | Chappell^ | Ponting | Border* | Gilchrist+ | Davidson3 | Warne4^ | Lillee1 | McGrath2

    W.I. XI
    Greenidge | Hunte | Richards^ | Headley* | Lara^ | Sobers5^ | Walcott+ | Marshall1 | Ambrose2 | Holding3 | Garner4

    S.A. XI
    Richards^ | Smith*^ | Amla | Pollock | Kallis5^ | Nourse | Waite+ | Procter3 | Steyn1 | Tayfield4 | Donald2

    Eng. XI

A nice video of Gavaskar remembering his 121 off only 128 balls against the West Indies in 1983.

After watching him bat again, I must say that his square-drive while down on bended knee remains one of cricket's best iconic shots.

What was also interesting in the video was that he rated his century at Old Trafford in 1974 his best innings. This is because he considered Willis, Old, and Hendrick an extremely difficult combination on a green-top in cold conditions.

Have we tried northern and southern hemisphere XIs yet? Taking out Bradman, let's see how they stack up:

    Northern XI
    Jack Hobbs
    Len Hutton
    Rahul Dravid
    Sachin Tendulkar
    Wally Hammond
    Kumar Sangakkara +
    Ian Botham
    Imran Khan *
    Fred Trueman
    Muttiah Muralitharan
    Sydney Barnes

    12th: Wasim Akram

I could have picked Compton and Ames at 6 and 7, but lack of a batting all rounder option means I have to pick Botham as 5th bowler and then to boost the batting, Sangakkara as the wicket keeper.

    Southern XI
    Barry Richards
    Gordon Greenidge
    Brian Lara
    Jacques Kallis
    Viv Richards *
    Garry Sobers
    Adam Gilchrist +
    Richard Hadlee
    Shane Warne
    Malcolm Marshall
    Curtly Ambrose

    12th: Keith Miller

Pollock, Headley, Ponting etc were some good options in place of Kallis, but at the end as a 5th bowler, can't find anyone better (Sobers will be used as only 6th bowler if it becomes necessary). Kicking myself for omitting McGrath but the 3 of only 4 pacers that I rate above him are all in southern hemisphere (Barnes is the fourth).

Who will win a contest between them? An imaginary match report or a simulation will be so awesome

Most people here will pay to watch Southern XI and justifiably so. Who can resist the 3 West Indian batsmen in the middle order and that pace attack along with the leg spin wizard! Presence of 3 Asian giants and two great English openers in Northern XI make it somewhat even for me. But still Southern XI is irresistible at the end.

    The West Indies are not far from the Tropic of Cancer which is north of the equator. So;

    North
    England
    India
    Pakistan
    Sri Lanka
    West Indies

    South
    Australia
    New Zealand
    South Africa
    Zimbabwe

How about a Captains XI vs Non-captains XI?

    Captains XI Non-captains XI
    Gavaskar *
    Hutton *
    Bradman *
    Tendulkar *
    Lara *
    Sobers *
    Gilchrist +*
    Imran *
    Pollock *
    Wasim *
    Bedi *
    ............................
    Waqar *
    Richards *
    Hobbs (wasn't officially captain, IIRC)
    Sutcliffe
    Barrington
    Kohli *
    Weekes
    Miller
    Knott +
    Hadlee
    Marshall
    Warne
    Muralitharan
    ............................
    McGrath
    Lillee

Non-captains XI batting will be in great strife when Kohli eventually graduates to the Captains XI.

Notable captains (30 tests or more)

    - Graeme Smith
    - Sunny Gavaskar
    - Ricky Ponting
    - Peter May/Greg Chappell
    - Viv Richards
    - Allan Border
    - Garry Sobers
    - MS Dhoni
    - Imran Khan
    - Kapil Dev
    - Dan Vettori

Strong batting but a lack of bowling options among guys who have done a large amount of captaincy.

On a tangent, time for an allrounder XI- guys who would probably be selected for their nation on one discipline (batting or bowling) only.
