Does consistent form over several seasons count for anything anymore?
Brad Hodge
ING Cup Since 2000/01
30 mts, 1174 @ 43.48, 6 50's, 3 100's, HS: 114
(2003-04 - 2 mts, 209 @ 104.50, 0 50's, 2 100's, HS: 108)

And he also averages 48.62 in the Pura Cup over that period.

Now I take a glance at Jimmy Maher's 2003 form for Australia for the calender year....

12 mts, 189 @ 21.00, 0 50's, 0 100's, HS: 49*

He has NOT produced ONE fifty.

His opening stats are interesting as well.....

11 inns, 154 @ 14.00, 0 50's, 0 100's, HS: 14.00

I reckon he's had his chance and stuffed it up.

You Aussies are always quick to point out how well they're doing during the English season...
Very true but it's hard not to when players like Hussey, Law etc.. play like modern day bradman's in county cricket.

Having said that it's all fun and games really and while I cant speak for others I never really read to much into somone's county form.

Michael Clarke can do the same thing and IMO he is a better batsman then Katich.
Average of 37 with the bat compared with 50...

Average of 55 with the ball compared to 34 in FC...

Right...

It took my long enough to come up with Hodge's bloody stats!!!

Give me a while ok?

Oh and obviously by those stats - Maher's not a capable opener either.

He did have an ordinary start to his career but I believe he averaged over 50 last season and you would have to admit he looks nothing short of quality.

Jimmy Maher
ING Cup Since 2000/01
25 mts, 1056 @ 47.09, 9 50's, 1 100, HS: 119

So there is an even picture of proceedings.

My real point is - Hodge makes runs and runs and runs and is not given a chance, Maher does at this level - yet fails at ODI level. How long do you continue with someone who keeps failing?

Mike Hussey
ING Cup Since 2000/01
35 mts, 1381 @ 55.24, 11 50's, 2 100's, HS: 106

Michael Clarke
ING Cup Since 2000/01
25 mts, 762 @ 42.33, 5 50's, 1 100, HS: 101*

Hussey's stats certainly surprised me.

Ian Ward averaged 70 last year, yet I don't see anyone calling him "quality"...

Yes the fact that he averages 40+ in FC and in the mid 30s in OD...yeah he sure can't open. Sorry I saw him play for Glamorgan, and he's a good opener.

Marc, if you were an Australian selector, ignore that Katich is similar to Lehman, and you were to pick a player who you wanted in the Test team, would you go for Love, Katich if Lehman were injuried.

And you'd be right, except I didn't say I was talking about ODIs. Guess again.

That completely sidesteps the issue!

Teams need balance as well...
