I had a topic like this a while back, but can't find it, so I decided to reincarnate it. Here I will post situations and you can give your decisions in response to the situation. I'll start it off with an unorthodox situation. Here goes...

You are captain of Team B and you are playing the last 4day game of the season against Team A. Team A is 10 points ahead of Team B prior to this game. Thus, your team (B) must win the game, if you are to claim the trophy for the first time in 50 years.

Chasing 250 to win, you have restricted Team A to 240/9 with star batsman (and captain) Joe Bloggs is off strike and on 105 not out. On strike is the number XI batsman Jack Specialist. There are 5 overs left in the day's play when the 12th man runs out onto the field with a message that Joe Bloggs' wife has just gotten in a car accident and is in the hospital in serious condition. Joe Bloggs decides to retire off the field immediately, thus forfeiting the match to your team - Team B.

What do you do? Do you allow the draw and concede the trophy?

Missed an 'n' in the title 'Crunch Time'. I would appreciate if a Mod. can correct this for me.

Allow the draw and concede the trophy...

Its a bit like asking the question... Are you a decent guy or not?

Not a snowball's chance in hell if it was the final day, I'm afraid...

Were there further days available then I would request play to be halted until the next morning.

Not difficult. If you go off... you lose, period. If you stay on, you have a chance of winning. And you're not gonna get given LBW, are ya?

England had that scenario and stayed on which resulted in one of the funniest moments of cricket when Inzy couldn't see the ball as it rattled past him into the boundary fence.

But we had Thorpe and Hussain in at the time so slightly different.

To be fair 3 runs is hardley a hard choice... you lose if you go off, so you might as well go down fighting and swinging... you might get a edge, but hey at 8:30pm... who's even going to see the ball coming their way, off the edge... stops about half way to the boundary, run 3... 30 mins later they give it up as a lost ball :D

You really from Leics? Up there it gets pitch-black at about 11:25 on June 21st.
Hehe Rich that's a floodlight match you saw :P

Seriously though it gets dark from the north downwards, so if it's not dark till 11:25 why do we need floodlights? And from my memory of being at Kent games it's pretty much pitch black about 9:00 - 9:30 about a 1/4 of the way through the 2nd inngs.

Your team is chasing 285 runs off 50 overs in an ODI against Australia under lights. The pitch has played well for batting so far, but now it's the tricky transition of a day/night match. McGrath and Gillespie are getting generous seam movement in the early overs and your openers have been dismissed with the score at 29/2 after 10 overs. Your batting lineup is as follows...

#3 - 39 avge/75 sr
#4 - 32/72
#5 - 32/62
#6 - 26/89
#7 - 24/95
#8 - 18/90
#9 - 12/88
#10 - 8/55
#11 - Neil Pickup :P

The Aussie bowling options are...

Gillespie (5 more overs)
McGrath (5)
Lee (10)
Harvey (10)
Hogg (10)
Symonds (10)
Clarke (10)
Bevan (10)
Ponting (10) :P

What is the approach?

Promote the number 11 to pinch hit and watch the target get knocked off inside 15 overs.

Promote the number 6 to 3 and have the number 3 at 4 get them to wack it until there 50 behind and go at 3 an over

In September the floodlights were taking effect from the end of the first-innings in overcast conditions (Edgbaston, that was), and it was dark at about 8:00. Best time for floodlit matches in England is early-mid August, where it's dark in most of the country at about 9:00 - 9:30, lights take effect from the start of the second-innings.
In June and most of July there's little need for floodlights (in Scotland the sun will only just have set at 10:30).
Remember, Rich, in 21Mar-21Sep it gets dark from the south upwards, in 22Sep-20Mar from the north downwards. Interestingly, ICC Champions Trophy games will be being played after the Equinox next season (cold!!!, especially in d\n-ers) so we'll have our first experience of top-level cricket when Scotland would be a better place for d\n-ers than the south.
