Well, the newspapers here claim that they were drunk and handing out notes to random passerbys. That is just plain stupid and condescending, hardly an 'act of benevolence'. A confession loses all meaning when you fudge the facts and make up lesser excuses.
Of course it's an act of benevolence, giving your money to other people.

Some psychologists would say that any good deed is looked upon poorly if it's outside of social norms. If someone gives money to charity, you think "how generous", but if someone walks around the street randomly picking up litter you think they're a little loopy. Your post embodies that theory.

Was still pretty stupid though, given where they were.

Stupid thing to do. Anything could have happened with drunk guys around, late at night. Maybe they should get some advice from steve Waugh about how to help the poor in India.
