In terms of results i think England can do a lot better than this. Some teams will get blown away. Freddy and Jonesy have been near peerless at times though with the ball though i agree, though Hoggard and Harmy can definitely improve though.Top_Cat said:The bowlers have been so good, in fact, that I doubt they'll all bowl so well together again.
You're talking about the individuals all firing at once, something which almost never happens. Of course they could possibly reach absolute perfection and all 5 bowlers could have world-beating days technically but what I meant was over the course of the series, all 5 have stepped up when the others are merely bowling 'well' or 'average'. It's rare in any team that all specialist bowlers have good Tests or good series (even for the Aussies; I can't think of one series, in fact, where Warne McGrath AND another bowler in the team had a great series). Most series', one or two bowlers do the job really well because of good form and the others who aren't in as good form, support. For all 5 bowlers (or 4, probably) to have their good form throughout a series is pretty rare and a big reason for their success. They've hunted in pairs and best of all, there's no relief for the bats after a good spell by two bowlers because it's followed-up by a spell every bit as good by two more.In terms of results i think England can do a lot better than this. Not these days with the big salaries. Most lads will play til they're dropped. Unless you're in the commentary box you're earning potential hits a pretty big decline once you're out of the game.luckyeddie said:......I see retirements - and lots of them.
its obviously only a guess, but i think that the england bowlers can bowl better than what they have. obviously theres room for big improvement from harmison, hoggard for most of the first few tests bowled far too inaccurately, jones can bowl better than what he has and its only really flintoff and giles who've probably bowled at their best, and even giles bowled tripe in a couple of games.Top_Cat said:Harmi hasn't been the dominant force everyone expected him to be, yes, but Hoggard has bowled almost as well as he can I reckon. He's taken the occasional key wicket and had one really good day in the last Test (good Test all-round, really). Flintoff has been excellent, Jones similar and Giles has been good and a bit unlucky. As I said, I don't think they'll all bowl so well together again.
I understand you've qualified your statement, but the likelihood of 5 bowlers all performing as 90%+ of their potential is very low. And really, I think it's fair to say that they have all performed at 80%+ of what they are capable of.tooextracool said:its obviously only a guess, but i think that the england bowlers can bowl better than what they have. obviously theres room for big improvement from harmison, hoggard for most of the first few tests bowled far too inaccurately, jones can bowl better than what he has and its only really flintoff and giles who've probably bowled at their best, and even giles bowled tripe in a couple of games.
i dont expect all of them to bowl well every game. nor do i expect harmison to have bowled better in this series than what he did, i do expect him to bowl better in the future because i think he'll become a better bowler and therefore learn more variations. as far as Jones is concerned, there have been several times in this series where hes been extremely wayward and i think he has room for improvement. Hoggard, if you hadnt already noticed was abslutely useless in all of the first 3 tests.vic_orthdox said:I understand you've qualified your statement, but the likelihood of 5 bowlers all performing as 90%+ of their potential is very low. Harmison could be the dubious one there, but while he may not have taken wickets, he has built an intangible amount of pressure from the other end, being reasonably economical while each batsmen is conscious of his ability to get them out at any stage, which he has pretty much always looked able to do.
