Nah, not really. He didn't really do enough to cement his place in the CB series, and Haddin had to be included because Gilchrist won't be available at the start.

There's nobody in that 15 man squad who shouldn't be there. White's the 16th man.
He did more than others who made the cut.

Why? It hardly matters in the grand scheme of things. He'll be there for all the major games, and it's a pretty important reason to miss a couple of irrelevant games.
Because the team comes first. Arriving a few days before the South African game, when you're hardly in the best of form, is not in the team's best interests in the most tournament there is in cricket. It's not he's missing the birth.

The others, with a few exceptions, were not playing for their place in the team. Everyone else in the team had already cemented their place in the WC squad, except for Hayden and Hodge, who made runs, and Tait and Hilfenhaus, who bowled well.

Gilchrist has played enough cricket to be able to walk into the team and perform, and really it's more important that he be with his family at such a time than be with the team. He's played in World Cups before, after all.

Besides, I think you can make a fair argument that it'd be a bigger burden on his performance to miss out on such times at home than it would to miss out on a couple of warmup games in the West Indies. It's not like he's inexperienced.

Tait bowled pies in the first game. Can't see why he made the team. Why isnt he playing in NZ? Would've thought they'd want a better look at him than just 2 games.

Watson has been useless since return. And Hogg has struggled at Domestic level this season let alone international.

Hogg > Cameron White in terms of Importance to the team, same with Watson. Add to that the fact that Hogg has a great ODI record with the ball, and bowled some very good deliveries in the two finals, and was unlucky not to take a couple of wickets. Also, Watson has a solid overall ODI record, and has just come off his best year with the Bat & Ball where he was probably one of our top 5 Players in both the DLF Cup & Champions Trohpy. Also, after the initial rain break in the 2nd final, Watson's bowling did improve, if only a touch, and if not for a brilliant catch, he was looking very good with the bat.

White on the other hand made 1 good performance with the Bat, and failed Miserably when he had the chance to show some fight, and the pressure was on. (Brisbane match, the ensuing match against NZ, and the 1st of our 3 losses to England).\

Have to agree on Tait though, i'm not convinced that he should be in. Clark could consider himself hard done by, and so could Hilfenhaus, who had a gun debut, but for no apparent reason it seems (in terms of match performances between his & Tait's debut, or before it itbt) Tait jumped a long way ahead of him.

It may not happen (or it will I don't know), but if they wanted to play Watson when Symonds comes back I woul assume it would be the place of Hodge, then I guess Watson would have to bat at 4.

IMO opinion tait adds a whole new dimension to the current aussie attack and he is the best reverse swing bowler in the country, his pace can be a real asset to the aussie bowling attack which has struggled to pick wickets in the middle overs where tait can be really handy. Tait also bowls well at the death where also aussies have had real problems. I can't see either hilfy or clark doing any of that.

Hilfenhaus and clark are new ball bowlers and are at there best when the ball is new, and that means they come in for lee or bracken and that can't really happen. As for tait's debut performance he gave away 68 runs for 2 wickets and mainly the runs came through edges which went for 4's. In the next game where tait gave 25 runs for 1 wicket, lee gave 72 runs for 2 wickets so would say he was also throwing pies.

Tait is a bowler, White is not. Not really a valid comparison. Besides, Tait showed a fair amount of promise and Clark struggled, so the switch was made.

Watson was excellent all last year. His place in the World Cup squad wasn't under question. White was holding his place while Watson was injured, and he didn't perform particularly well. Why would they retain White ahead of him? Simply makes no sense. You don't leave out an incumbent when they return from injury when the substitute hasn't done anything particularly brilliant.

Hogg is in the same boat. He's an incumbent, hardly struggling for his place.

TBH, I think with White that while he's at 7, it'll be similar to Symonds' early ODI career. It's a tough life when you're either coming in to slog at the end, and the only time you get a chance to have a decent bat you have to save the team from a dire situation.

Yeah. Ditto Watson, and most other players who start out there because they can bowl a bit. Though obviously Watson's not much of a hitter, unlike the other two.

White will be a regular member of the ODI side by the next WC anyway. This one probably came a year or two too early.

That is the reason that makes clarke and hussey great players because they started their careers batting at no.7 and made immediate impact with amazing consistency. Though got to say one thing watson was pretty good at no.7 the other day, played really aggressively and was unlucky that he got out due to an excellent catch. He needs to bat more often like that at no.7.

4 of Michael Clarke's first 7 innings at number 7 were scores of 2 runs or less. And 7 of 17 innings in total at that position have been 6 runs or less.

If you are an optimistic aussie fan like me then you would agree that, the finals loss to england is not as bad a thing as made out to be. As this shock defeat is just the kick on the backside that would make them more focussed and determined to regain lost momentum. This defeat would make them analyze[deficiencies] things that might have gone unnoticed if they would have won.

Michael clarke played some splendid innings too with those low scores in his debut tour of the caribbean. In his debut game he took aussies to a victory after they were in trouble chasing down a modest target against england with a 30 odd not out score. Playing at six and seven the man got an allan border medal so he might have done something right.

Fair dinkum - it's the World Cup, and yet Gilchrist is still wanting time off.

How much is enough for that bloke?

There have been guys (like Warne with his first child) who have missed births.
Which tells us a good deal about those two characters.

Different people have different priorities in life. If someone puts cricket above family, that's their choice. I don't agree with it, and those who don't agree with family>cricket should also respect those who purvey it.

all i hope is that when Gilchrist returns & presuming Symonds gets fit by the time the super eight round that Watson is batting in the top order.
