*Four Day: Round One Reports

Graham

3rd Umpire
LANCASHIRE at Hampshire

Hampshire batted first, but could only manage a disappointing 165 all out with opener N.Johnson (45) the only contributor worthy of mention.
Star pace bowler S.Harwood did the damage for Lancashire, ending with figures of 17-3-59-6. He was backed up by the reliable veteran A.Dale (19-5-54-2) and E.Kellar (8-2-13-2).

Lancashire really put the pressure on the home side by racking up 331 all out in reply to gain a sizeable first innings lead of 166 runs.
Youth player O.Beasley made an impressive debut, making 77 before tragically being run out. K.Baumgarner (73), J.Madanagopal (52) and M.Ramprakash (39) were the other batsmen to perform.
S.MacGill (20-2-84-4) and M.Sigera (18-4-34-2) both bowled well for Hampshire.

The home fans were looking for a better second innings performance with the bat, but S.Harwood and A.Dale ripped out the top order in devastating fashion to have Hampshire reeling at 26/5 and in danger of total embarrassment. I.Ul-Haq tried to stem the tide and aided by some defiance from the tailenders managed to steer his side through to 176 all out. I. Ul-Haq finished cruelly short of a well deserved century on 89no.
S. Harwood was again the destroyer with 15-5-43-5. A.Dale (20-5-57-2) and E.Kellar (11-2-40-2) also backed up well from their first innings efforts.

Lancashire required a paltry 11 runs for victory and the openers A.Schiller and M.Ramprakash polished these off without loss.

Hampshire – 165 and 176
Lancashire - 331 and 14/0

Win to Lancashire by 10 wickets.

International Captain
Warwickshire @ Glamorgan

Warwickshire won the toss and new four day captain Sridharan Sriram opted to bat. This decision would backfire rather quickly. No one showed any resistance except for Ghulam Ali (41) and Daniel Howarth (32), as the Bears collapsed all out for 146 in only 58 overs. Parkin was the destroyer with 5/42.

The chance now arose for Glamorgan to take a substantial 1st innings lead. But things didn’t go much better for them either. Hasnain had Ganguly (0) out LBW, then he clean bowled Powell to leave Glamorgan 2/16. Glamorgans innings from then on started and stuttered as the failed to get any partnerships going. Dale (41) and Dominic Hemp (34) were the only batsmen to trouble the Warwickshire bowlers. Kaneria (4/39) and Hasnain (3/47) were the pick of the bowlers as Glamorgan were bowled out for 186 with a 40 run lead

Again Warwickshire made a poor start as Ali (9) and Derick Anderson (27) both went early with the score at 2/54 and a lead of only 14. However finally to the relief of Warwickshire fans Sriram and Howarth came together and played a superb role as Warwickshires fortunes finally made a turn for the better. Howarth played superb making 63, before he was caught by Dinge off the bowling of Parkin, ending a 153 run stand. Warwickshire’s lead now looked much healthier at 177. Sriram played magnificently before succumbing to Upashantha, LBW for 149. After that the innings crumbled as Upashantha ripped through the tale. 315 all out was the final score, with lead of 275.

Glamorgan needed 276 to win off a minimum of 206 overs. Ganguly (0) went first bowl off the innings as he stupidly chased a wide ball outside off stump. He edged it to Ali at 2nd Slip. 1/0 after one ball and Ganguly had picked up an embarrassing ‘pair’. Powell (19) would follow soon. Trying to hit Gregson down the ground, he simply didn’t get enough bat on it as Sriram had an easy catch at Mid Off. Dale (19)didn't last long either, as he fell to Hasnain LBW. The innings now revolved around O.Hemp (93) as Glamorgan hung in there, but as Wickets began falling Hemp eventually went too, caught and bowled Gregson. His dismissal left Glamorgan 4/154 and really in the poo with little batting to come. Lawson finished it off taking the last four wicket. Glamoragn were all out for 206. Warwickshire had won by 71 runs.

Sriram picked up man of the match with his captains knock of 149 in the second innings. A good but not prefect start to the season for the Birmingham side

Warwickshire 146 AO & 315 AO bt. Glamorgan 186AO & 206 AO by 71 runs

TN @ HOME TO WA

A sunny day in TN to welcome the Warriors to a big match against the loacal heroes TN. Jayasuria and Langer went out to toss the coin. the result, Jayasuria winning the toss and choosing to bat. Hazare to open the bowling with the shiny 4 piece kookaburra. Jayasuria to face the new ball with his shiny gun....err bat. which also happened to be a kookaburra. Highsmith was his partner down the otehr end.

After some gr8 aggresive batting from team captain Jayasuria he was VERY dubiously adjudged LBW by Ashocker De Silva off the bowling of Hazare. the ball clearly pitched outside leg. but a gr8 cameo innings as it was. Jaysuria out LBW for 37 from 38 deliveries. TN 1-66 next in was the ever-persistant budding youngster from the Windies. Maron Samuels. Highsmith still at the crease. 51 runs later and highsmith was caught by Justin Langer off the bowling of Kumaran. Highsmith our for a very well played 52 off 71 deliveries. Flowers enters the Arena..... and then walks off after being bowled by Kumaran 6 runs l8er. Next in razzaq.... few minutes and 16 runs l8er Razzaq is out for 1! Samuels next out for an EXTREMELY we ll played 51 off just 51 deliveries. Arasu and Vidyut put up some good resistance with the tail. but TN still out for a somewhat lowley 270. carter had figures of 5/89 . and Kumaran exceptional figures of 4/36.

Wester Australia batted well to get to a formiddable score of 399 thanx to gilchrist's firey knock of 47 off 47 and some gr8 lower order batting from OStler to achieve 95. Razzaq the pick of the bowlers with 5/64.

When Highsmith and Jayasuria walked out to teh middle u could feel the tension. it was up atleast 1 of these 2 to start the innings off well and give TN a chance at the match. Highsmith stood up and delivered the goods! 84 off 151 gave TN a good start.a bit of a collapse when Samuels, FLowers and razzaq were all out quite cheaply. when the little hero himself with a batting average of 45 stepped out onto teh field. this was the man to win them the match. or possibly lose it. Arasu stood up and delivered. but was extremely annoyed for only reaching 87 off 137 balls. more often than not the little legend goes on to his 100. but not this time. TN ended their innings with a good score of 324. but most ppl could tell it wasn't going to be enuff. as it was only a lead of 195

Gilchrist and Langer walked out to the middle with a certain comfort and ease. this was going to be a walk over, right? WRONG! The Wester Australia top order looekd exceptional, Gilchrist average of 42.7, Langer average of 49.52, Hussey average of 51.3, Martyn average of 49, Goodwin average of 44 and finally Keegan average of 60. A top order that seems indestructable. that's not the way one man saw it. While all of his team-mates walked out there with there heads down Shrinvas jogged out head up. with the new ball in hand. gilchirst got a 2 and then a single. which brought langer on strike. his very first ball langer was out! shrinivas had him caught for a golden by Vidyut. may-b there was still hope? hussey walked to the crease with a certain arrogance. but just 4 balls later was walking back after shrinivas bowled a perfect ball and hussey kicked 1 behind arasu took a regulation catch. things were starting to change. if only slightly as martyn walked to the crease at 2-9. but he and gilchrist started cruising along well. until shrinivas had anoterh breakthrough flowers took a gr8 catch at point and dismissed gilchrist for 22 off 29. teh score at 3-30. godo win in. but only 8 balls later shrinivas had anotehr victim goodwin out caught at 3rd slip by razzaq for a duck. score at 4-30. things were starting to look good for TN. but out came WA's star batsman. Keegan walked to teh middle. he and martyn appeared to be crusing until teh bowling change of engineer for chapman struck a breakthrough. Martyn out for 34 off 47 deliveries. a superb catch up at the stumps by Arasu. 5-70. 1st innings hero Ostler came to teh crease. but after facing 12 balsl was out for just 4. engineer getting in on the act this time. anotehr good catch by Arasu and Ostler was walking. things were now in TN's favour. WA at 6-89. Yovich and Keegan steadied the ship and it appeared as though WA were going to win by 4 wickets. as shrinivas was taken out of the attack for razzaq. but how all thoughts and feelings were wrong Keegan out for 46 off 120. score at 7-160 after a good partnership. just Kumaran, Carter and hazare left. it was the 1st of which who came out to face the next ball. after putting up a good fighting 7 off 19 he was dismissed lbw by razzaq. another shocking decision by De Silva. 8-172. a few balls l8er and Razzaq had Yovich out for 57 off 70. TN looked certain to win now. and that they did. Carter last wicket to fall for 0 off 4 deliveries. WA ended up with a meagre 172. TN WIN!

A deserved man of the match was Shrinivas who ended up with 7/117 !!!! Razzaq a quit achiever with 8/95 :O!

TN's FIRST WIN UNDER ANDREW CLOETE!!! THE PARTY WENT ON FOR HOURS INTO THE NIGHT!!!

and i think it can now be touted, TN r a shot for teh division 2 title. any under estimations on the opponents part might see them in alot of trouble. watch out for Shrinivas, Razzaq, Arasu and Engineer. they r match winners. while the resst of the TN team r looking very solid. TN might be returning to their former glories.

How unlucky can you get, if being dismissed for 97 in the first inngs wasn't bad enough.. he did it again by getting dismissed for 97 in the 2nd.

Queensland started their battle to stay in division 1 with an away game against Surrey at the Oval.

Qld batted first and were solid reaching a first innings total of 302. Love top scored with 120 and received good support from Pothas 69. Ormond took 5/77.

Surrey could not match the Qld score and made 288. No one really shone for Surrey with Blewett 58 and Thorpe 63 the best. The wickets were shared pretty evenly.

Qld's 2nd innings was much better getting 460. Maher 135, Hussain 115 and Bichel 74 were the stars. Tudor with 4/87 was the best of the bowlers.

QLd expected to roll Surrey and win the match but did not bowl well as Surrey reached 5/420 and drew the match. Ward 106 and Blewett 112 did the damage. Fogden took 3/78.

The Qld manager was happy with the away draw limiting the possible damage.

Cricketer Of The Year
South Australia vs NSW

Well this was the big one for SA..
After a great opening win in the 1 day game last week, they were out to back it up with a win in their 1st 4 day fixture of the new season against a strong and determined NSW side which boasted a total of 10 former or current International stars..

The SA team looked much stronger than last season and pre season form suggested they were up to the challenge...

Winning the toss and electing to bat 1st NSW lost new recruit Kirsten for only 3 with the score at 15..
Captain Bevan and Michael Slater who was playing his 1st game for the blues after a stint with QLD last season, put on a 72 run stand before Stratton claimed his 1st wicket, that of Bevan for 31..
Kallis joined Slater at the crease but the SA international followed the same script as his proteas teammate falling for 5 making it an ordinary strat to the Africans NSW career..
Michael Slater was joined by Lara and the 2 took the score to 174 before Slater finally fell for a well compiled 83.
From there Lara took centre stage with a brilliant innings of 155*, he recieved good support from the tail will all partnerships except for the one with ferguson producing 20 or more runs... NSW bowled out for 384..

For SA the standouts with the ball were Statton and Dennet who both took 3 wickets, Stratton especially good with 3/26 from 15 overs..

In reply to the NSW total SA got off to a good start with Jenkins and Williams taking the score to 46 before Williams fell for 15, and when Jenkins(28 ) and Stratton (0) departed soon after SA had slumped to 3/55.. Snow and Lehmann began the rescue mission but Snow soon fell for 11, leaving SA reeling at 4/84...
When Oliver joined Lehmann at the crease nobody would have thought what was about to happen was possible...
Oliver on debut for SA in 4 day games came to the crease looking like he had played 100 games and with Lehmann they belted the NSW attack to all parts of the ground in what was a clinical but lethal batting display.. A Partnership of 283 in which both batsman brought up their hundreds turned the game and had NSW on the back foot..
Lehmann eventually departed for 139, but Oliver remained and brought up his 150 on debut before finally falling for 166 with the score at 425..
Samuels and Pawar made sure that SA had a decent lead by scoring 41 and 22 respectivley...
SA eventually bowled out for 466 a lead of 82..
McGrath and Ferguson both picking up 3 wickets..

NSW then had a challenge in front of them with still 1 1/2 days of cricket to play they had to bat well to stay in the match....

Kirsten's chance to redeem his 1st innings dismissal was lost when he again fell cheaply, this time for 4 with the score at 11..
Bevan and Slater steadied the early shakes with a partnership of 56 before all turned pear shaped for the home team losing 4/25 including Bevan, Slater, Kallis and Cairns. NSW struggling at 5/92..
Lara chipped in with a quick 20 but he was dismissed by golden boy Oliver who was having a great game and NSW were in deep trouble at 6 for 139.. Lee and Haddin then stepped up to the mark with Lee posting a half century but when he fell for 54 NSW were still only 210 and needed more.. Warne offered no resistance falling for 0, but Ferguson made 11 which gave Haddin time to get his 50 and push the score up to 250, but thats when Ferguson fell and was followed quickly by McGrath with Haddin left there on 68..
Dennet again picked up 3 wickets but Strattons 2 for 17 and Axelby and Snows doubles gave SA the bowling edge..

With SA chansing only 169 and still the best part of a day remaining due to NSW's fast run-rate SA were raging favourites to finish off the blues, and from the outset Williams and Jenkins showed what a opening combo they could be this season with a 82 run stand in pretty good time.....
Williams fell to Cairns for 41, but Jenkins and Lehmann kept the pressure on and eventually completing the victory with 9 wickets in tact... Lehmann 46* and Jenkins showing signs of last years form with 75*..

A great win for SA against a strong looking NSW side..
Manager Brendon Goff was estatic after the win, saying that his boys really stood up to the challenge...
"We have a young side and for the boys to come back after being down early its a credit to their attitude. After the Lara 150 we could have put heads down and shut up shop, which is what we would have down last year, but the boys stuck to it and with Boof leading the way the youngsters followed"

When asked about the Division 1 race and told that both other games ended in draws Goff had this to say.."Look Division 1 this season is without doubt the strongest its been, and it looks as though the batsman will have the majority of the fun, but the team whose bowlers stand up and deliver week in week out, will most likely be the team who stand tall at the end of the season..."

Leicestershire vs Tasmania

Leicestershire opened their 4 day campaign against arch rivals Tasmania.

Batting first, Leicestershire put on a good performance, with the new opening pair of M. lumb and I. Bell reaching 74 before Lumb (36) was trapped in front by a vicious ball from Jason Gillespie. D. Samaraweera (9) came in at number 3 looking to have a good first innings, however that was cut short by Muttiah Muralitharan, who then went on to capture captain Ricky Ponting for an agonising 17 ball duck... 21 runs later Bell finally fell for a gritty 65 off 157 balls. At 4-126 Leics were looking quite shaky, however a solid middle order performance managed to provide Leics with a nice total. First round draft pick Y. Ogden (48) keeper S. Deitz (33), Darren Maddy (47), Vince Wells at number 8 with a solid 74, and Phil DeFreitas 36*, with Muller and swain falling cheaply. Leics all out for 382.

Tassies Bowlers bowled well, making Leics work for the runs with a total of 43 maidens. F. Akram being the pick of the bunch with 4-64.

Tassie opened their innings looking to beat Leics first innings total, this was nopt to be however. Midlane's racy 19 off 15 was looking good before being bowled by Swain with the total 1-24. Next in was Hills, also bowled by Swain for a dissapointing 7. Knight entered and along with Saeed Anwar put on a 50 run partnership before Knight become the first victim of deFreitas. Enter Jacques Rudolph at 3-88, who with Anwar put on a 105 run stand before Anwar(84) hit his wicket. 4-193. Evans came and went for 10, before Rudolph finally fell for 67. Jacobs (25) and Canning (22) attempted to steady the innings, and Murali made a respectable 21, however it was not enough, Tas all out for 320.

The Leics bowlers all bowled reasonably well, with DeFreitas 3-76 being the best.

Seconds innings and Leics crumbled, all out for 223, with Lumb (52) being the only real contributor to a measley total.

All of Tassies bowlers showing consistentcy, Canning the best with 3-54. With Tasmania requiring 286 to win, the game looked like it could go either way, the Leics bowlers knowing they'd have to perform well to clinch the game.

And perform they did, ripping through the tassie line-up. Muller 4-57, DeFreitas 3-46, Swain 2-20 and wells 1-27, leaving the visitors all out for 172, with Anwar top scoring with 31. What looked a close game was not to be, Leics comfortably winning in the end by 113 with DeFreitas picking up MoM for a good game with the ball and a respectable 36* in the important first innings.

Manager David Kennett was extremely pleased with his teams performance and glad to get one up on arch rival Richard Langley and his Tasmanian team.

Western Province Chip in for Points

Western Province were keen to make up in the four day game for their poor performance the week before in the one day fixture.
Things started slowly for Province with former Yorkshire opening bat Richardson being dismissed for 1. New start Rabbi Llewellyn began pushing the innnings along before he was dismissed for 35. Around him in the mean time wickets had fell and some big names including Laxman cheaply. The score was 5-77 and the former County quicks were getting the better on a pitch offering some assistance. However the depth of Western Province was about to show. Captain Nathan Astle was well supported by all rounders Ronnie Irani (50) and then by Yates (59*) before being dismissed for a determined 129. The score hit the 343 mark before the side was finally dismissed.
Auckland's top order began well against a fancied WP bowling attack. The score had reached 75 before Hogg struck first blood and the second fell soon after with Nelson claiming his first of many wickets in the future. From then the Auckland innings never gained momentum again with the Western Province bowling line up taking wickets at good regular intervals. Horne 88 and Lynch 53* were the only ones who showed any resistance with Yates and Nelson taking 3 a piece to see Auckland dismissed for 286.

Province were keen to enforce their edge they had won in the first inning. Richardson was the star making up for his first inning failure with his century in the second which was well supported by Rabbi Llewellyn with his 64 up the other end. This partnership basically ended any hope of an Auckland come back with the score going to 2-160. From there the innings was lead by a solid 47 from Hylton Ackermann confirming his spot in the line up. Once again all Auckland's bowlers bowled well to get a wicket each.
378 was what was needed for Auckland and they were a chance. However a wonderful spell from Brett Lee with the new ball confirmed his name as one of the game's fiercest bowlers. The top three were dismissed for 33 with Lee getting all of them. However maybe just maybe Auckland's fine middle order could get them home. Despite some solid batting from Howarth (62) and Harris (37) no one was able to steer them close. Hoggy was also impressive taking 3/49 and dismissing Auckland for 194.

Slats4ever on the victory.
"Look I'm really happy to get a win out've this game. Really it was mainly for the boys confidence. Everyone chipped in well with the all rounders Yates and Irani deserving special mention. Astle and Richardson's batting was also superb and showed they may not be the biggest names here but they are just as able to perform. The bowlers were real strong and guided the side home".

In a word: "Disappointing"

Victoria were looking forward to this match, and after many selection distractions from Somerset's Manager, it seemed certain to be a confused Somerset coming out to play this weekend. Really having Richie Johnson batting above Jimmy Adams???

We went with a strong batting line-up, on a still unknown Somerset pitch, but only one of our batsmen made a good score. Grahme Lloyd making 104 in the 2nd innings. It was a case of too little too late though, as Somerset trotted to a comfortable 374 run victory.

The bushrangers will be looking to re-structure the batting order next match, and there may only be space for one keeper/batsmen.

The Phoenix had their first game as the hardest trip in the compitetion. Getting off to an ok start but struggled in the end to make a competitive total as Mumbai gobbled it up and made a tough total.
Hooper unlucky on 97
Then yorkshire went in to bat again and scored a staggering 509 dec. with hooper again on 97 and law a fighting 140 odd.

Then the last innings mumbai were on their way with two century makers but alas time was up.

Getting away with a draw was a respectable effort against last seasons runaway champions.

Double Century to Mills as Canterbury Have Narrow Victory

Being two of the stronger sides in the division 4 FC competition, this was always going to be an improtant match for Colts and Canterbury.

Colts opened the batting and got off to a good start, and at one stage being 3-302 thanks to some good batting from Singh (112), Anderson (95), Sharath (39) and Shewag (40). Then the collapse started with Colts losing 7-73 to be all out for 375. On a pitch offering little spin Clarke took 4 wickets, while fast bowlers Kirby and Khan also took a couple.

Canterbury's innings started poorly with 3 quick wickets with only 39 runs on the board. But a 104 partnership between Mills (203) and Chanderpaul (40), followed by a 205 run partnership between Mills and Raza (45) put Canterbury back on track. Canterbury were in the strong position being 4-348 before Faisca tore through the lower order and finished with figures of 5-92, as Canterbury were all out for 374, giving Colts a first innings lead of 1 run.

The Colts second innings was dissapointing compared to the first with only Sharath (87) and Anderson (63) providing resistance as Kirby took 4-39 and Clarke 5-76. Clarke finished with match figures of 9-160 as Colts were all out for 250.

Needing 252 for victory, all the Canterbury batsmen made starts without anyone going on to make 50, but thats all that was needed as Canterbury struggled to victory with 3 wickets in hand. Jaffer top scored with 41 while Klusener, Faisca and Noffke all took 2 wickets.

Leicestershire opened their 4 day campaign against arch rivals Tasmania.

Batting first, Leicestershire stank and were all out for 382.

Tassies Bowlers bowled better than any other players in the history of the game but bad umpiring from guess who... F. Akram being the pick of the bunch with 4-64.

Tassie opened their innings looking to beat Leics first innings total, but yet again bad umpiring was the main cause... the bad decisions were like a plague and Tas were all out for 320.

Seconds innings and Leics crumbled, all out for 223, mainly due to the bad umpires being replaced by the fourth and fifth umpires after contracting SARS.

The bringing back of the SARS affected umpires was the downfall of Tasmania in the end, as Tassie slumped to lose by 100+ runs.

Manager Rick Langley was extremely pleased with his teams performance and glad to play two-up against arch rival David Kennett and his stinky team.
