Zimbabwe in South Africa (Tests and ODI's) Discussion

The battle of Africa, can the Zimbabweans get one on their more powerful rivals??

South Africa look comfortable and after very good performances to date in the World Cup i feel they will have to much firepower for Zimbabwe...

Both Mr P and I are very happy with the way the world cup has progressed so far and the way the side a gelled as a unit. The world cup was our main concern for this international season and we'll be looking to take it out.

The home test series against Zimbabwe is a place that I think Mr P and I will be looking at trialling a few things to get the combinations just right for future test series. We'll be giving every player in the squad a chance to prove themselves at test levels. Whilst Mr P and myself are looking at trying things out at the end of the day we believe we should whitewash Zimbabwe, despite them showing some solid form in the world cup.

In the One Dayers a few of the players who didn't get picked to represent South Africa in the World cup will get a run so look out for some fun and different line ups.

Don't underestimate Zimbabwe, we have a few class players who could really do some damage

Guy or Ian, can you confirm whether you would like to call De Villiers back into the side now or leave Snow in there...

If De Villiers comes back in Snow will not be able to play again unless someone is dropped out due to injury and he is call up again...

*Eagerly awaits Blewy's post*

Edit: By the way, this may have been addressed elsewhere so sorry if I'm repeating it, but do these games count towards the players averages?

This game will be up soon, typing it immediatley after this message..

These stats do not count to Career Averages, We may however look into seperate International Averages...

The Battle of Africa...
People were suggesting a One-sided affair, and after the World Cup performance of South Africa, who could blame them.. But tests are a different story and when 2 Rivals go at it, there is never much in it...

Zimbabwe won the toss and batted on what looked to be an extremely good batting wicket. They proceeded to show the rest of the World how to bat 1st in a test match.. Half Centuries from Vermulen, Jones, Ervine and Cole backed up a masterful century from Barney Rogers. Rogers 163 was worth the admission on its own and led Zimbabwe to a commanding 487... The challenge was thrown out to the South Africans....

In Reply South Africa started steadily however the arrival of Llewellyn and Funston at the crease sparked fireworks..
The 2 Province boys gave the Zimbabweans a taste of their own medicine.. Funstons 158 was as good as any and Llewellyn was robbed of a 100 by a cruel decision. The South Africans though could not match the Zimbabweans score and were dismissed for 383...

A 104 run lead was very pleasing for the Zimbabweans, however they knew they still had work to do..
Although losing early wickets Zimbabwe fought on and Captain Murray Goodwin led the way with a very good 100, showing that he is up to the standard.. Goodwin remained not out on 119 when Zimbabwe were eventually dismissed for 247, leaving South Africa a chase of 352 to take a 1 nil lead...

A massive chase for the South Africans was made even harder when Mawhire and Cole dismantled the South African top order within the 1st 3 overs.. Clissitt, Godwin and 1st Innings Hero Funston all back in the pavillion with the score only at 5...
However Llewellyn set out to outdo all before him.. The South African skipper hit the Zimbabweans to all parts as he racked up massive numbers and with the support of Orton and Halse saw the South Africans home in an amazing game..

Very good showing by the boys there in the first innings, if only our middle and lower order scored a few more runs in the second innings. Hopefully this'll show that Zimbabwe have what it takes to really challenge teams

I must say i was very very impressed with the Zimbabweans performance... South Africa were very lucky after conceeding 480 odd in the 1st innings that Llewellyn and Funston did the job for them otherwise they could have been much further behind..

Wow...what a game! Well played Zimbabwe, i'm annoyed we let them get in to the game so easily, and maybe the consequence of that could be changes for the next Test, but still it was a great effort to win the game...

Ian will be stoked...the WP boys won the game, and I think this will go down as Llewellyn's match.

woah didn't expect that to be honest. Thank christ that a few of our players stood up and saved us from complete embaressment. Funston was superb, as was Llewellyn (why did I ever trade Llewellyn) and Tate was definately the pick of the bowlers proving he has what it takes to make it despite his age.

Full credit to the Zimbabwean cricket team who put up a sensational showing. I fear however it might be their last of the tour and only hope that they can continue to fight. They were weak i the second innings and their bowling wasn't strong.

Probably the most Entertaining 1st Test, and high expectations were had of this 2nd test... Nobody expected the Zimbabweans to take their more fancied opponents as far as they did and the neutral fan hoped they could do it again...

The South Africans won the toss and decided to make first use of the pitch..
After a solid 118 run opening stand the South Africans lost their way, falling to 5-173, however resistance from Halse and Pothas halted the Zimbabweans and helped take the South Africans to a 1st innings total of 296..
A Little less then they had hoped, but a total which would allow them to apply some pressure to the Zimbabweans...

In Reply the Zimbabweans showed their 1st Test heorics was no flash in the pan.. After a 97 opening stand, they fell away to be 3-127, however a brilliant century from Durrant and a heartbreaking 99 from Ervine helped the visitors to a very good 369..

73 runs behind, the South African batsmen, like the 1st test were called on again... Concern flew through the camp when Clissitt was dismissed early however half centuries from Godwin, Llewellyn and Funston helped the hosts recover and build a solid score putting the pressure back on the Zimbabweans.. South Africa All Out 344

272 was the Target for the Zimbabweans.. They needed to overcome a dissapointing 2nd innings in the 1st test, a very patriotic home crowd and a wicket that was showing a few signs of wear and tear..
First innings hero Durrant fell for 8 with the score at 11, but a 2nd wicket stand restored some hope.. But the pressure was to much as Zimbabwe couldnt defy their more powerful opponents...

South Africa seal the series but Zimbabwe have shown they are able to put up a challenge and will not be taken lightly in the future...

Great to win the series, but i'm a bit annoyed we didn't take it out easier...perhaps some changes to the next Test side...but who knows...we're winning anyway...

Unlucky there for the boys, it's a bit disappointing to have let South Africa off the hook twice in two matches. The way they've played these last two games shows that they really deserve to win a match and hopefully we can take home the third one.
