Worst WK in terms of WK skills

Dhoni is certainly not the worst. He only botches a few stumping chances to Kumble. Haven't seen the others carefully - he might be the worst if they are all very good.
You dont have to see a keeper botching a stumping to realise how bad he is.

The best test of a keeper is how good he is standing up for the simple reason that it gives him ridiculously little reaction time to take snicks or sudden unexpected deviations of direction or height.

This is where the technical excelence and hence the quality of a keeper is exposed.

Just watch the next game that Dhoni keeps wickets in and see how many balls hit the middle of his gloves when standing up. A very small proportion I can tell you in advance but you dont have to take my word. Go and watch and keep score. It is indicative of poor footwork technique, early getting up etc. Many of these poor collections may not actually be chances but they tell you that the probablilty of this keeper taking the chance when it came is relatively low.

Dhoni is certainly poor standing up but I am comparing him to other international keepers. In terms of athleticism and agility, he is actually quite good - he does a better job keeping to fast bowling than several other keepers. In terms of reaction time, he is obviously poor but that weakness is exaggerated by the fact that he keeps to Kumble 50% of the time. Boucher, Gilchrist and Sangakarra are all far superior to Dhoni, but who do the rest have to stand up to? Panesar? Gayle? Vettori? Kaneria? That's all I'm saying.

McCullums a very good wicket keeper, he stands up to Vettori, Patel, Styris, McMillan, and I'm sure I've seen him up there with Bond bowling (his slower balls later on in the innings mind you). So don't lump him in with the others!

He's like a spring, one of the best out there at the moment. Sanga is looking as good as anybody at the moment too. Gilchrist is just the best right now and Boucher is as Boucher does.

Dhoni looks outclassed in keeping by even the likes of Niall O'Brien who actually looked quite good at times. 9 catches and a run out from the man behind for Ireland. Pretty good especially considering the side.

Ok lets take stock of all the keepers in the eight top cricketing nations.

Australia : Gilchrist
South Africa : Boucher
New Zealand : McCullum
Sri Lanka : Sangakarra
England : Nixon
Windies : Ramdhin
Pakistan : Kamran Akmal
India: Dhoni

There is no comparison between Dhoni and the first four. They are way ahead of him behind the stumps.

Kamran Akmal has suddenly fallen apart. He looked very competent less than a year back. We have seen it happen to keepers when they have a crisis of confidence. I have no doubt he will bounce back. But yes he hasnt looked good recently.

I havent seen enough of Nixon to say he is better or worse than Dhoni. Ramdhin is as good or as bad as Dhoni.

Akmal for me, at the moment anyway. His wicket keeping has been shocking and I can only assume that it is because of his lack of runs.

Mushfiqur Rahim, makes some simple errors but his keeping to the 'spinners' is rather neat.

Rahul Dravid. Can't get lower than that. Thankfully that phase is over. It was really sad to see one of the Indian team's greatest assets reduced to such a liability there.

Otherwise, bar Gilchrist- ALL wicketkeepers today.

Why do so many people seem to have this view? I thought the wicketkeeping during the WC was for the most part outstanding. There were few simple chances missed while there were a number of superb dismissals, with guys like Sangakarra and McCullum regularly taking catches and making stumpings off 125 kph bowlers like Vaas, Franklin and Oram.

Yep I agree. McCullum, Sangakarra and Boucher are all very good keepers who would be getting more recognition if Gilchrist wasn't such a great batsmen.

He was pretty good at first, I don't understand what happened. This bad patch has almost lasted too long to really be just a bad patch now.

Haha, I wish there was some YouTube footage.

Dropped some of the simplest catches I've ever seen a wicketkeeper drop.
Yeah, he was more a ball-stopper than a wicket keeper. If he got his body behind the ball, that was cause for celebration amongst the fielders.

It's perfectly conceivable to me that the good patch was the exception, the awfulness the rule.

akmal is probably worst, dhoni isnt much better though, geraint jones will never play for england again i dont think(at least i hope so) so hard to include him in if this was at international level
