Expected this thread to be about Nick Knight from the title, a far more puzzling omission
Knight was in the squad but was in bad form in the lead up. England made a last minute decision to drop him for Hussain.

“Stewart: It was a decision made the afternoon before the opening game, which is wrong. We’d been inconsistent and Knighty had been inconsistent but if we had our time again Knighty would have played and Nasser wouldn’t have done.”

We had players. The selection was way off though. That someone like Paul Johnson didn't get a single chance at ODI level is testament to that.
