Depends on what makes the average side average. Insert any of those great batting units above to current SA and they are a great side.

To an average side I'm going with world class bowling every time. And lol with someone like Imran, you have class bowling plus decent batting. Recent India, 80s WI (post '86), 90s south africa had very good batting but what kept them at the top, was their bowling and ability to take 20 wickets almost anywhere.

India in the 2000s had the opposite, great batting but decent bowling and their fortunes were far less.

I mean if it's an actual situation, an ATG bowler or 2 ATG bowlers would improve the results massively and much more than even better ATG Batsmen would. That's just the nature of test cricket, wherein you need to take 20 wickets to win the game (99.9% of the time)
