Have recently purchased ICC2005 Ashes Edition - via ebay this time - paid under GBP10, including shipping to Auckland, NZ.
Thus far I am not having any luck at all! Only consistant performers for the kiwis seem to be McCullum, Oram and Vettori. All the other bowlers get spanked and my top order get rolled easily. Franklan and Bond bowl well in patches but are more likely to get 20-1-80-2 than 15-5-35-3
Tried a full game with Hampshire, thinking Shane Warne, Tremlett, Pieterson and Crawley would surely fire....to no avail either.
In desperation, I tried the artmoney file in the Lancashire cheat (it's in 2006 and is available on the boards somewhere) with the likes of Tendulkar, Bandara, Grant Flower Cork, couple of Kolpak players, Freddie and James Anderson.
Guess what? I am still only having limited success. Freddie and young Jimmy are away with England more often than not, Tendulkar and Bandara are quality players, often carrying the batting the bowling respectively....and I think I may have worked a strategy for 20/20 games. Win the toss, bat on full aggression with your best batsmen opening and when you bowl, change the field to ultra-defensive and bowl through. Have one the competition now, but struggle with the fact that Flintoff bowling 2 or 3 overs for 40, the opposition rack up 200/3 and then you are 5 down for 35 in the 4 over. How does that happen?
And how does a bowling attack containing Anderson, Cork, Flintoff, Bandara, Hogg and either Keely or Mammood unable to defend 400 on the last day, either by slowing the scoring or taking wickets. Opposition stroll in, but yet when we are chasing on the final day, we are more often than not rolled for 180 early on the final day.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game, the concept and the random player generation at year end - I just wish the game play was more realistic in 2005! Because I think in the absense of any patches, I'll be re-loading ICC2000 and the players db beacuse it is just so damn unfair. I'll play until the end of the season, but have come to the conclusion that having millions of pounds means nothing and hasn't even given me the sense of satisfaction that I thought it would.
Ho Hum - I'll play it a fair bit this weekend and see whether I make any inroads....
