Eye test for players you've actually watched consistently throughout their careers is a very valid metric because you can in theory pick up on small flaws and nuances that may not show up in the numbers. Eye test for older players using 10 minutes of online footage isn't worth too much though.

Beyond that, with players you've personally watched extensively, live you naturally and intuitively understand all the context around each individual performance that gives it actual weight and merit, which is very hard to with random highlights.

Huh? 2016 to now has been the hardest era for batting in tests, ever. Australia have been producing green tops, every deck in india is a sandpit, etc. New Zealand and Sri Lanka are the only countries good for batting RN.
Dont disagree with anything you have said and this isnt directed at you per se. But i find the assessment in bold funny, because most on here love calling out Steve Smith for playing on flat home pitches. But now all of a sudden, they are green tops.....

Australian pitches have been some of the flattest in the world for most of the period from 2010 to now. Those greentops have started popping up for the most part only recently, like the previous Ashes.

In ODIs, yes, it is a closer comparison. Viv, Sachin and Virat together are the 3 best top order ODI batsmen of all time. Choosing the best among them in ODIs is only subjective.
ABDV getting criminally underrated here.
If he was an Indian / Australian player, he would have been challenging Sachin / Viv for the GOAT crown, and with a clear supremacy to Kohli.
