This one is harder than the AB one. Probably on par, but Dravid still edges it because he did it for much longer and had more iconic moments against top attacks.

Dravid failed against Steyn and SA in general. Didn't seem to handle bounce in Australia well. Kohli has him beat there.

selective sample sizing, he also has a much better record than Kohli in Eng and NZ, plus having iconic innings in both Aus and SA (against Donald and Pollock).

You are against selective samplings yet base your choice on a few innings. Don't get a job in research.

Agreed. But because Kohli returned with a good series in 2018 against Anderson, I am inclined to him overall.
Yeah. Dravid's good series in Australia wasn't really comparable. Understrength attack in far better batting conditions. Dravid never really produced a consistent run of scores against a strong Australian or South African attacks home or away. Did have a decent tour of 90s WI at least.

WI 97 (no ton). England 2011. Those are Dravid's best overseas series performances against quality attacks. Kohli has definitely had the deeper troughs and I would take Dravid over him in some conditions but Kohli has also had the greater highs against quality pace.

Also 96 in SA against Donald Pollock was a good performance.

Then he has overseas failures against good attacks in 99 against McWarne, 97 and 2008 against Murali, 2006 and 2011 against Steyn and 2002 against Bond. Would also include 2007/8 in Australia with Stuart Clark and Brett Lee in his brief worldclass phase. Also wasn't great at home against great bowlers.

So basically he failed more than he succeeded.

Wanderers 96 was outstanding and boosts his CV but that was one test match. He struggled in the other two tests of that series so he never really had that consistent run against South Africa.

I rate Dravid ahead of Kohli by just a small margin currently.

Dravid v Root is already tough in my opinion. Dravid's career being five years longer is significant but think Root has a good chance of finishing ahead.
