I voted for AB out of childhood nostalgia but I’m not sure objectively it’s him. Is he more consequential, absolutely, but a better test batsman, I don’t think so.

They have similar averages in similar batting era, VK plays up the order and has more centuries in far fewer tests and more of a track record out of home conditions.

Border has an an amazing well rounded record. The only flaw in his record is that he didn’t score tons that often which is why I don’t think he’s clearly better than guys like Kohli and Williamson. Very close comparison.

AB averaged below 40 against the best team of his day - the West Indies. Couldn’t even bag a decent average against South Africa in his dotage. Big question marks.

But seriously, Border all day long and the rest of the week too.

AB - 111 out of 156 tests in Aus and England. Great numbers everywhere but not the same track record of iconic innings away from home.

Look, I love AB. Childhood hero of mine. But it’s not that black and white
He averages 57 away from home and has significant innings basically every where he played. Not like he didn't avoid touring like those weaklings Chappell /Lillee too.

Pick kohli if you want, but border literally has one of the most impressive away records of any ATG batsman I can think of. Just a very odd point to try and make.

That's still 45 tests leftover. Virat has 46 without home and England.

Border's record actually improves if you chop away home + any other country. Must be very close to zero other bats this is true for in modern cricket.

I admit I didn’t fully statsguru it but yes his overseas performance is remarkable so scratch what I said.

But so is Virats, although characterised more by iconic innings rather than pure consistency.
