Trumper sucked as an opener. He was basically average
Trumper as an opener: 32 matches 52 innings 1650 @ 33.00
Other openers in his matches (note: I haven’t filtered it completely for only those 32 matches, I’d have to go further into detail, I’ve done it for the period he opened - 1901-12 - and that narrows it to 43 matches.
Other openers in his matches 8471 @ 32.09
Mitchell as an opener 27 matches 48 innings 2390 @ 56.90
(similar case to Trumper here as both only opened partially in their careers)
