It makes sense when Philander does not play LO for SA. And after the Eng series there is 4 tests in the next year; 2 against Pak and 2 against SL. Until Feb 2021 against Aus.

Philander has probably timed his retirement perfectly for him and for SA to find a replacement in the next year.

But when you look closer his only weakness was being a wicket-taking threat in Asia. He only bowled 31 overs in Bangladesh, 87 overs in India and 70 overs in Sri Lanka.

Had he bowled a similar amount in those countries as other fast bowlers then his career average probably would have been about 23
