McMillan was basically a poor ODI player so he’s a clear last. Fleming also flattered to deceive in ODIs and fits somewhere between McMillan and Astle. I wanna say Astle and Styris (with Styris being closer to a proper all-rounder) are ahead of Twose based on longevity, but late-career Twose arguably had the highest peak.

That's pretty much how I call it too, but McMillan seems to be overrated as an ODI player bcos of that innings vs Australia in Hamilton, and Fleming bcos he looked the best when he scored runs.

McMillan averaged 28 lol, can't be him. Despite seemingly having the game for it. He really undelivered internationally

I'll say Astle for the countless tons

Styris turned into a very good ODI player. He started as someone in a completely WTF role that had me shouting at the tv - a slowish bowler who batted 8 or 9. True bits-and-pieces. Played 188 ODIs but didn't score his first 50 until his 42nd match, and only batted in the top 6 consistently from around that time. But from then on his batting was good and his part-time bowling was extremely valuable.

Twose had great numbers though you wonder if it's partly a short career coinciding with a purple patch.

It's hard to go past Nathan Astle though. On a related note, I see Guptill has just overtaken Astle's career ODI runs.

Remember when McMillan came on to bowl with Aus 0-200 and proceeded to take 4 (I think) wickets getting them all caught at deep square leg with 115kph half-trackers. Good times. He was the proto-Wagner.

had a quick statsguru. If you Jimmy Anderson his statistics to delete when he was not a batsman his average jumps from 32 to 36 from 147 games, which was very solid for an ODI #4 or #5 for his time.

You can give Astle’s stats a bit of a ‘played in the 90s’ boost but to a large extent they accurately reflect that he’s a little bit overrated. He got out cheaply a lot and he wasn’t generally a particularly fast scorer despite being a good hitter. Was pretty block/bash and would get bogged down if he made it past the field restrictions.

If you Jimmy Anderson Styris’s stats I reckon there’s a good chunk of time where he’s averaging 36+ with the bat and low 30s with the ball at a respectable e/r and as a regular bowler. Pretty serious ODI all-rounder from like 2002-2007ish.
