Top 5...

No one rates Giles ahead of Kumble. Natman only had a mental blank and forgot about Kumble, when he redid his list Kumble was a mile ahead of Giles, who wasn't in the top 5.

OK. I must have missed the second post. Although even without Kumble I don't think Giles is within shouting distance of the top 5. There's still McGill,Vettori,Harbhajan and Kaneria after the big three. Giles is probably fighting for the number 8 spot with the likes of Boje,Afridi etc

i would actually say its Gupte, followed by Chandra, follwed by Bedi, Kumble and Prasanna in that order.
Considering your rather irritating disrespect for players of yore, this view appears slightly bewildering. IMO Subhash Gupte is overrated.

Look at his Test record against the best teams of his time:

v Australia 3 96.3 263 8 32.87 3/89 2.72 72.3 0 0
v England 8 326.4 903 24 37.62 5/90 2.76 81.6 1 0
v West Indies 10 642 1716 49 35.02 9/102 2.67 78.6 4 1

And against the worst:

v New Zealand 5 356.4 669 34 19.67 7/128 1.87 62.9 4 0

It appears that he was not the bowler some people like to believe and only has a good Test record because New Zealand were so weak. I would pick Kumble, Bedi and Chandra above him.

Fair enough- maybe he doesnt deserve to be on the top of the pile. However, one has to take into account that his career was cut short much before it had run its full course, simply due to a libellious rape case( which the accuser later re-tracted).
But i would still rate him ahead of Harbhajan so far.

Top 5 Spinners

1 Warne
2 Muralitharan
3 Kumble
4 MacGill
5 Danish Kaneria

Followed by:
Harbhajan Singh
Mohammad Rafique
Kartik
Mushtaq Ahmed
Giles

If anything, this thread shows two things:

1) Stuart MacGill could (would?) have been a great spinner had Warne not been in his place
2) Beyond Warne, Murali, Kumble, Harbhajan, MacGill, Kaneria there are very few other quality spinners in the world today, it's just Murali's and Warne's success has overshadowed the lack of talent

I fail to see why Kaneria should be rated higher than Harbhajan.

Without Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, Kaneria has 109 wickets from 26 matches @ 34.97.
When the same is applied to Bhajji, he has 170 wickets from 39 matches @ 28.82

Kaneria averages 34.80 away from home in 16 matches ( 68 wkts) and minus BD/ZIM, that is 14 matches, 55 wickets @ 39.69

Same applied to Harbhajan yeilds 65 wickets from 22 matches @ 37.07 away overall and 42 wickets from 15 matches @ 40.95

Yes, Kaneria is very talented but i would be inclined to call it in Harbhajan's favour right now.

Actually 7 quality spin bowlers (including Vettori) is a lot; probably more than any other time in cricket history. Especially when you consider that the first three are giants who are among the most sucessful bowlers of all time.

This is the golden age of spin bowling. It's fast bowling which is relatively lacking with only McGrath and possibly Akhtar worthy of inclusion among the greats.

Probably wouldn't make the top 5, but Lara's 688 runs in 3 Tests must be up there.

A bit surprised that you'd have Flintoff ahead of Botham's '81 (399 runs, 34 wickets and 12 catches).

For the top 5 series performances I would keep Bradman,Botham, Harbhajan and Laker and drop Hammond for Sobers against England in 1965 where he scored 722 runs and took 20 wickets.
