@Coronis and I have had some discussions with regards to who would be the 3rd name on an AT XI written down on an AT XI team sheet.

His argument has been Gilchrist as he believes that the gap between him and the next best keeper-bat is greater that any gap between players there after. My counter is that based on philosophical perspective, Knott is making it as a better glove man, and there's only one spot, plus wk is a relatively low impact position on the team.

My argument is for Marshall as the spearhead of the attack, and if I can only pick 3 guys to help win a match or series, he has to be the pick. His counter is that if he doesn't play there are closer replacements. Close doesn't mean better however, and the guy with the new ball is arguably the most critical member of a team, and he's more likely to make the team and with two batsmen already selected....

Strangely today though I asked 3 different AI's and they all chose Warne, and easily with Maco 4th and some combination of Gilly and Tendulkar following behind. The argument being that as the sole spinner his impact is greater, especially late in tests, last day wearing pitch etc, and his pure force of personality.

So what says the forum, who are you choosing.

Sachin and Warne don't belong in this conversation for my money. I'm picking both, but they are both marginal picks, especially Warne.

As much as Gilly is a no-brainer for me, I would rather lose him than any of Marshall, Imran, or Hadlee. I'm not sure which of those 3 would be the biggest loss and my 3rd pick.

I guess my thinking is just alternate to that.

For me personally I’d rather have

Hobbs
Sutcliffe
Bradman
Tendulkar
Hammond
Sobers
Gilchrist+
Hadlee
Warne
Steyn/Imran
McGrath

than

Hobbs
Sutcliffe
Bradman
Tendulkar
Hammond
Sobers
Knott+
Hadlee
Marshall
Warne
McGrath

Only three of them make my ATXI, and I think...Gilly is the given one, one that I can't replace.

I'd take 1st team with Imran in it above the second comfortably. With Steyn, I'm not sure. It's very close. Probably still the first. The fact that you are putting McGrath in the second team when I wouldn't changes the equation for me.

Warne doesn't even makes my AT World XI
And you must also know that's a minority opinion.

It's really weird that you choose all of your pacers based on their batting yet then choose Murali over Warne ignoring all of that.

Ummm..... For the umpteenth time, Imran is a proper allrounder and the 4th Greatest player ever, Marshall's batting is just handy and Hadlee is just McGrath who can bat. It's a weird fettish of yours that I "choose" my bowling for batting, I just find McGrath over Hadlee overall in any case Stupid. And I am afraid, Murali over Warne isn't an opinion much in minority either.

Answer of these four is obviously Gilly. Knott is a decent choice but still a distance from Gilly as the obvious one.
