As much as Sunny rates higher among openers that Ponting does among middle order bats, I believe Punter was better and more impactful.

Comparing legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Ricky Ponting isn't fair.
Gavaskar played in an era without modern protective gear, whereas Ponting thrived in a more advanced cricketing world.
Both were fantastic batsmen in their time.
In terms of runs, Ponting's 27,483 runs and 71 centuries surpass Gavaskar's 13,214 runs.

You really mixed Test and ODI stats?

Here's a hot take (coming from someone who rates him highly by the way) :

Ponting had a grand total of zero truly great series away from home against great bowling attacks. If anyone can point one out, I'm all ears.
Is this really a hot take? I feel this has been pointed out a lot here, usually with comparison to Smith.

In terms of wickets Anderson’s 959 wickets and 34 5’fers surpass Marshall’s 533 wickets.

Ricky, he could beat you

Gavaskar could only draw you

Very few people who played against Gavaskar feared him, they respected him but didn’t fear him

Everyone feared Ponting

Can't recall if I posted this already.

But Rickey was the only opposing batsman that ever scared me to that degree. Definitely him

Sunny gets a boost for being an opener, but Ponting was overall a better bat for me. He dominated attacks like Viv used to. Sunny makes XIs as great openers are rarer, but purely as batsmen I'd take Ponting.

RP is grossly underrated here.

Grossly, as a batsman and a cricketer.
