The idea that this is even a contest is ridiculous to me tbh.

Yeah Williamson's away performance ain't good. And Root averages below 50 now, which will just decline; thanks to Bazball.
Root's good better long form bat than Kohli to me. Smith is top 10 of all-time though.

Wouldn't disagree. Kohli averages 43 away from home in test.
Nah Kano far weaker as a bat overall.

Agree if tests only.....but OP stated all formats. That being the case it's most definitely a contest.

Averages 67 at home, gotta give it to him for patriotism
The big thing with Kohli is he had a 4 year period he was magnificent. Not enough time imo and very apples and oranges otherwise.

It’s close. Root has a mediocre record when batting at #3 and a mediocre rate of scoring hundreds so I prefer Kane who averages 60 since Roots debut. I guess Kane has a few more “holes” though so I can see why someone would prefer Root.
Kohli is clearly better than both though but seems to be underrated here for some reason.

That's why I excluded him from the poll.
Overall it's still Smith. His Test superiority is unsurmountable without top tier limited-overs work.

lol. There are positives and negatives for all of Root, Kohli and Williamson. There isn’t a “clear” victor between them. Williamson is currently in his peak still unlike the others which also makes it harder to judge. Root is better across conditions, scores tons less often than the others but scores 50+ far more regularly. Kohli and Williamson both have high conversion rates and like to go big, but have big holes in their records.

Kohli really doesn't have many big holes in his record except for England, but then again he also have an ATG series there. Arguably the best in SA, near ATG in Australia, great at home. The strongest point against him imo is his trough from 2020-23.

Across all formats, it's Kohli easily. Definitely the most complete batter amongst the fab four.
But since Kohli is not in the poll, its probably Smith then.
