South Africa Vs Australia 1999 world cup semi final

Donald with ball and Klusner with bat performed superbly in that match. Still they had to take all the blames.

Classic example of
" Man proposes.. Kallis disposes."

That Pakistan side was incredibly lucky to reach the final. Lost to India, SA and Bangladesh in the Super Sixes and had an easy semi final against NZ.
?? Pakistan and NZ beat Australia in that World Cup. They were clearly in the top 4 teams in the tournament.

If Herschelle had caught Waugh in the Super 6 match between SA and Aus, Zimbabwe would've made the semis and Aus would've missed out.

Yeah, there can't be an easier match up in a world cup semi final than New Zealand.
We had a terrible record in WC semis but we've won the last 3 in a row that we've played (including T20).

NZ have actually made the 2nd most ODI WC semi finals behind Australia.

100% true story

They had the Duckworth-Lewis targets printed out on paper in the rooms (it was 2003 . . .) and the target for each over was what they had to get to tie the game. They didn't realise they actually had to get 1 more run than the target printed on the paper to go through. Big **** up.
I don't think they were going through even they hadn't bottled it. NRR basically put them out before that moment. IIRC they lost to WI the opening game and then lost to NZ in a rain curtailed game thanks to one of the best OD hundreds I have seen from Stephen Fleming

Incorrect, they would have gone through. They would have actually finished 2nd in the group (rather than 4th like they did) with the extra 2 points from the win. They had a better net run rate than both Kenya & New Zealand who finished 2 and 3 in the group with the same number of points SA would have had.

In fact they had the highest net run rate in the group, higher even than Sri Lanka who finished on top. Thanks to ridiculously dominant wins against Bangladesh and Kenya

Well I didn't check any of that but I was referring to something I heard while the game was on progress. Or maybe it was that Sri Lanka would have already qualified even with a loss.

I was 13 so memories are rather blurred

Evidently. You're right that SL would have qualified even with a loss. If SA won they would have finished top of the table though.

SA at that stage had a mental hold over Pakistan so they likely would have won.
That Pakistani side had just one extra loss compared to South Africa and that is only because the latter’s semi-final was a tie in reality. Incredibly lucky is a funny way of putting it.

they also were the toppers of the table in the super-six stage which you’ve also conveniently not mentioned. Their bowling attack was also arguably the best in the tournament on form and paper. The batting was not up to scratch though

Shaoib Akthar looked insanely quick right throughout now I think about it

It was Klusner, Akthar, Neil Johnson show in early stages.

England was the first team (or something like that ) to qualify into super 6 according to media reports.. ?

Donald was also particularly good in that edition dropped pace and changed from being a fast bowler to become a line and length, on the other hand was young akhtar in sharp contrast was scaring fast and yet Zulu was still able to dispatch him for a six on mid-wicket area in a crunch situation when a loss was clearly on the cards for South Africa and still Klusener came out on top in that competition.
