I would have picked someone like Weatherald or O’Neill for the Odis just to see how they go at international level

Matt Short and Nathan Ellis will never play tests plus this series is the very definition of a filler so get some guys in who might have something to offer at the highest level

Your treating ODI's like there test prep. Short was first choice in the CT with head before his injury and actually found some form. With a WC in 2 years I like the idea of giving him a run of games to settle.

Odi XI is probably

1 Head
2 Short
3 Green/Marnus
4 Marnus/Green
5. Inglis
6. Carey
7. Owen?
8. Bartlett
9. Dwarshius
10. Hazlewood
11. Zampa

Not 100% on the bowling. Second spinner wouldn't have hurt, especially with Maxwell finished.

T20:
1 Head

2 Marsh

3 Inglis

4 Green

5. David

6. Owen

7. Short? Maxwell?

8. Abbott

9. Dwarshius

10. Ellis

11. Zampa

Hardie and Bartlett not playing the t20's is criminal with Abbott being there.

They were for many years (e.g. Damien Martyn) and did us no harm

I don’t think anyone (apart from the selectors obviously) believes that Short is better than Weatherald in pretty much any format atm

O'Neill shouldn't be playing white ball unless the conditions really suit. Will be fodder for international bats on a flat wicket

Yeah, can't see his skillset cutting in international limited overs cricket at all. If anything it is a touch surprising his domestic white ball stats are actually okayish

Good to see Lance Morris is still alive

Seems a bit of a waste of time to organise all of these 50 over games for Aus A this year when they clearly don't matter for ODI selection.

Out of that squad I would go:
Head
Short
Marsh
Green
Inglis
Carey
Owen
Bartlett
Ellis
Hazlewood
Zampa

A couple of other thoughts:
- We will really miss Smith in this format
- Exciting to see Owen in the ODI squad
- Notable that both Cooper Connolly and JFM have been left out of both squads. Connolly especially is a surprise omission given how he was being shoe-horned in at all costs over the last year

Think the best thing for Connolly going forward would to be nowhere near internationals for a little while so as to get a full season for WA under his belt.

I don't think it's fair to bracket him with JFM on the basis that he actually has been genuinely impressive in the few Shield games he's played, but yeah the selectors attempt to shoehorn him in (especially as an allrounder, which he just isn't) is doing his career no good at all

I don't really see the point of sticking with Marnus for ODI's. He's been handy for sure but hardly dominating. With Smith gone it would have been a good chance to get at least one of Renshaw, McSweeney or J Sangha some exposure as the cake in the lineup (and some international experience as well). Green can be the other cake but will likely need to be rested at times if he's going to be a 3 format player.

If they fail then bring back Marnus later for the world cup.

I have no idea whether O’Neill will cut it either but the guy is levels above Ellis and Dwarshuis in red ball so I don’t see the harm in giving him a run in a series such as this

I will be very surprised if Marnus isn’t in the frame for the Ashes unless he fails to score a run in the leadup as it’s pretty obvious that they’re going to give him every opportunity

He will open I think. Green got better at 3 so it's harsh to bin him atleast at the beginning

No Marnus, no World Cup win
