Who was the 2nd best first drop batsman of all time.
Who was better suited for the role and better overall?

Is interesting how both have their best performances at 3 yet spent the majority of their careers not batting 3. (5 for Richards - also a ton at 4 and 4 for Hammond)

Ricky Ponting is the answer to this question
Think he's a very viable alternative and next in line.

Similar to Ponting Viv was just a natural choice for the no. 3 position. The ability to not only handle but dominate fast bowling and potentially turn the tide of a match in a session.
He was the Master Blaster, King Viv.

Hammond, while undoubtedly a brilliant player, did express his displeasure having to face the west indies quicks, who were in no way comparable to the legends that Viv battled with.

Ponting played his career at 3, Viv only partly. They resembled each other more than most players.

Barrington worth a shout imo. But again, he didn’t play the majority of his career there, just like Wally and Viv.

For blokes who mainly played 3 I’d say its between Sanga, Ponting and Dravid. Headley worth throwing in there too but its always a little hard to rate him.

This is an even bigger plus for Ponting, not only did he stay on in the team, he didn't migrate further down the order in an attempt to help protect his numbers.

I don’t think retirement or migrating down the order is about protecting numbers in most cases - its more often about younger batsmen who may have already a “specialist” position they bat in and the player/teams confidence they can adapt to a different position.

Migrating down the order to “protect their average” specifically makes no sense in this case as all these batsmen mentioned have their highest averages at #3
