Anwar a personal favourite of mine but Flower likely better, but only marginally so

Edit – kind of weird how there is a 5-6 point average difference but almost no Run-per-inning difference, Flower made 42 runs every inning but Anwar made 44, if you remove his 1990 game, Anwar made 45. Guess it comes down to Flower carrying a weak lineup which deserves credit, though would say Anwar also faced the new ball.

I’d go with Anwar. Flower was great, no doubt, but I don’t think he was really tested against top-tier pace attacks outside of home conditions. Anwar opened during the tough 90s era when fast bowling was relentless, and he held his own. That’s impressive. To be fair, Flower had to carry a weak Zimbabwe team, so credit to him for that too.

Probably about even as bats. If I was forced to pick one then I'd go with Anwar just cos of aesthetics.

Flower did what he did whilst keeping which puts him ahead as a Test player though.
