Wild to underrated him that much for even a ~30 match peak.

Even though I don't weight SR quite as heavily as these guys, it's still an important consideration for your spearhead. And Waqar had easily the best for that.
Mostly to early 90s SL, Zimbabwe and a **** ton of NZ. His peak began after an Australian Series and ended with an Australian one. In Peak, he had 2 excellent 3 match Series against a very strong WI and a good albeit not excellent Series to England. The opposition there largely is really lackluster to be a Top 5 strong candidate.

But the stats in and of themselves were better than anyone barring Imran. So how can you fault him for beating up who was in front of him, about as well as humanly possible?

Why should I take them on face value, when they were against weaker teams and Marshall, Bumrah, Murali, Hadlee, Barnes etc maintained similar averages against much stronger teams??
