Ian Chappell actually played vs WI in 79/80 under Greg’s captaincy and batted three, though he was past his best by then.

I remember that fact because he was fielding at fine leg in an ODI that summer at the SCG and I along with a stack of kids kept asking him for his autograph only to be told “The captain won’t let me…”
Hahaha yeah right Ian.

Looks like Chappell family is the most influential family in Australian cricket.
Ian Chappell’s influence in helping to get WSC up and going was, and still is huge.

Greg was a master batsman but probably his biggest influence on Aus cricket was as a selector in the late 80s when he, Laurie Sawle and then John Benaud started picking young players who they knew weren’t ready for test cricket yet but who they backed to develop into gun players.

Blokes like Steve Waugh, Healy, Boon, Marsh and later Taylor got a run in the test side and formed the basis of the team of the 90s.

Just so we're clear, the sides I posted aren't ranked according to strength. I just posted them randomly.

GChappell still has a lot of informal influence in that way tbh. If you suddenly see a teenaged batsmen getting big media buzz out of nowhere it's almost certainly because of him. Craddock is particularly open that he basically just asks Chappell who he rates from the young up and comers and uses that as the basis of his own articles.
