by definition, if you play at the same or similar level for longer, you are a more valuable player and have had a better career.
Only if you are too lazy to do deeper analysis and just want to reward the player with 10 more tests to his name.

Once can make the case Botham is a better batter bit differences between them are marginal at best as reflected in the averages, and the context of how they respectively performed against the Windies and the additional length of Kapil’s career
So averages = absolute quality to you, is it?

Length of Kapil's career is irrelevant as Botham already has a large sample size. In fact, that record chaser Kapil should be docked points for it.

Do it for series with a minimum requirement for runs.

It sure looks comparison between batsmen in SAME league, but if you look closer its very evident Pollock's stats boosted by not outs ( Same as Imran ).

You may have a point in dismissing the stats I posted. They seem a bit questionable as a means of rating a bat. Not sure what I was thinking, or how I came up with that idea. Apparently they don't mean that much.

the problem is this is justpoor stats analysis without context. When they were playing no one considered Botham a superior bat to Kapil, in fact the alternative for much of their career. Whether this is in fact true or not, that was certainly the contemporary perspective.
Kapil Dev was already Ian Botham equivalent in early 80s, and all knows what happened to Botham since then.
Kapil's ultra fast batting was considered a special thing and helped the team many a times especially avoiding follow ons.
Comparing Kapil's batting to Pollock's is like comparing Sachin's ODI batting to Klusner's. Plain numbers without context.
