Peter May vs AB de Villiers

Who is the better test batsman?

Johan

International Coach
May.

Both players lack longevity but I think May was a lot better at home and better in Australia, and was averaging 49 before abscess killed his career which is insane considering the type of wickets he played his Cricket on, also think batting position is a key factor and May was plain better in the top 4.

Patience and Accuracy+Gut

State Vice-Captain
De Villiers. Had so much of talent, probably higher than any batsman apart from Bradman. Never had a big interest in ODI’s except when he played. Underachieved in tests by some margin imho.

That's a skill issue on his end and he should be penalised for it, we have to rate Cricketers on what they actually achieved instead of what their ceiling was.

Agreed. If he had played like 3 more years and didn’t skip those 2 years in the middle, we’d likely be comparing him to top 10 bats like Lara.

As it is he’s still rated as an ATG by many and pretty close to Dravid and Miandad, so he still had a great career.
