Was going to include Paul Adams in this to make up the 3 main SA spinners from the era, but his bowling record is leagues better than both so I feel this a better comparison.

These guys both had pretty unexpectedly solid moments with the bat in the national team, but their bowling was a pretty big joke

But who was better?

I felt Symcox was the better bowler but they needed Boje more since they needed a spinner more in the 2000s than they did in the 90s.

I hate Symcox so Boje it is.
Apart from some of the off-field stuff, didn't he also bowl a deliberate wide that went for four to try to stop Nathan Astle reaching 100 in an easy ODI chase at Eden Park?

I thought it was blatant, but this report from the game seems to provide benefit of the (very small) doubt...

This was not achieved without a degree of drama, Symcox bowling four wides down the legside from the first ball of his eighth over to bring the total within two, and again looking to be sliding down leg when Astle connected with the winning runs.

The suspicion was that the big spin merchant was trying to deliberately deny Astle his hundred, although this should not be accepted categorically. He had already been smashed for 60 off seven overs and seemed to have no idea where the next one would land.

Boje. I remember him scoring a couple of ODI 100s vs NZ in one series as well. Symcox was also a very biased commentator - I think he did the 2011 World Cup quarterfinal and kept talking about how SA was so much better than NZ and couldn't possibly lose.
