Oman at the next Asia Cup

The OCC (Oman Cricket Club) has finally been recognised as a sports body by the ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. This is a huge step in the progress of the game here. Basically what this means is Oman is now eligible to play in the ICC Trophy in June. But more importantly, from next year Oman can play the InterContinental Cup as well as the Asia Cup alongside test-playing nations like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc. Oman have confirmed that they will send a team to the 2006 Asia Cup to be held in Pakistan.

The reason Oman has qualified for the InterContinental Cup, the Asia Cup and the ICC Trophy is by being played runners up in the ACC Trophy held last year, which was won by UAE.

I don't know about all that.. It has been quoted in our newspaper the Times of Oman, that the ICC has assured Oman a spot in next years Asia Cup in Pakistan..

Maybe they have a spot in Asia Cup by finishing 2nd in ACC Trophy, cus it is a 1D tournment, but i doubt they would quailfy altomatically to the InterContenial Cup. The Fast Track Tournment is a 3Day Tournment so you would think the top three would quailfy. I think you'll find that they would qualify for the Fast Track Tournment, by given Associate status and maybe qualify for Asia Cup.

But im not sure about that one considering HK and UAE qualified for the last Asia Cup by finishing in the top 2 of the Fast Track Tournment. Maybe their changing the qualifying process, or Oman have a chance of qualifying for the Asia Cup through the Fast Track Tournment, and you read a bit a hyped journalism.

Small point, but isn't that competition organised by the ACC?

Yea well.. let's see time will tell !!
By the way do you know we still don't have a single turf wicket here. All our matches are played on cement pitches. The outfields are devoid of any grass whatsoever, just sand.
Anyways, the OCC say we should have the first green cricket pitch here by around December next year!!

Does it really matter how many born and bred Omanis are in the side, if they can't get a game for Pakistan then why shouldn't they play for another team. Lets say Mubrak didn't make the Sri Lanka WC squad in 2007, which is very likely, why shouldn't he play for USA.

Because, unlike club sides, Internationals should be tied into a country.

Especially if they've already played internationals for a country.

Then what about guys like Hamilton and Joyce; Hamilton was allowed to play for England only 12 months after playing for Scotland in ODIs, Joyce would still be allowed to play for England even if he plays Ireland in ICC Trophy.

Fair enough you shouldn't allow players to pick and choose which team they want to play for, which actually aready happens, but if a team doesn't have international/test status then why should you be able to play for them. if you have eligable to play for two countries and you don't get picked for your Test playing nation, you should be able to play for the other team.

Doubt there will even be one. But the good thing is at least 10-11 out of the 15 have been born and brought up out here. Although their nationalities are Indian or Pakistani, they have learnt all their cricket here and are not just ex-first class players from other countries.
The opener of the Oman team is the captain of the Pakistan school team. When our school played against them he made a 200 in a 25-over game! He also scored a 50 in 13 or 14 balls against Bhutan in the ACC Trophy.. Really look forward to seeing him against Pathan, Sami and co.

The only real way you'd be allowed to play for someone like Oman would be residency, and that would mean you wouldn't be playing any real standard of cricket to get the option to play for anyone else.

You could play for a team like Oman if you were born there or your parents/grandparents were.

You are absolutely right.
Check out the players from Oman, Qatar, UAE. Majority are from India and Pakistan.
It sounds funny when you have players named Afzal, Khalid Khan, Irfan Ahmed, Nadeer, Nasir etc. playing from HONG KONG. Where do they come from???

Asian Cricket Council

Pakistan to host 2006 Asia Cup

Cricinfo staff

May 11, 2005

The Asian Cricket Council has unveiled Pakistan as the next hosts of the six-nation Asia Cup, which will take place in February 2006. It is the first time they will have hosted the competition.

The two-week tournament begins on February 14, and will feature two pools of three teams. The first will be made up of Pakistan, India and Oman, while the second will include Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates.

"The full programme will be announced shortly," said Ashrafaul Haq, the ACC's chief executive. "Since the normalisation of the Indo-Pak relations last year, Asian cricket is flourishing, and the better relations augurs well for Asian cricket."

The first-round matches will be played at Rawalpindi and Karachi, while the second round and the final will be played in Lahore. Sri Lanka, who hosted the last competition, are also the current holders, having beaten India by 25 runs in the final in Colombo.
