we don't have tests to waste on bowlers with no zip. we'll get creamed even harder if we give rope.

he'll play though because it's pretty obvious the selectors view boult-southee-henry as a group and wagner-ferguson as another. wagner saved his spot last test. they won't play both because larsen/stead are too obsessed with their attack structure.

at least with no mchesson we can't do the truly stupid and pick sodhi or someone. mccullum moaning in the comm box all wc about southee and sodhi being left out made me very relieved he was safely retired.

this is a situation hwere it might be best to keep the #batdeep crowd in the sheds. pope scoring nice and slow is what we like.

Well based on this, and I know the pitch is flat and England have been playing cautiously, but we’ll really need Boult and CDG back in Australia (not that Mitchell has been bad, he’s just not CDG. No comment on Henry). Fielding will also really need to take a step up ... blown catches and run-out have cost us big time in this match.

Not giving Ferguson a run has to be one of the bigger selection blunders I’ve seen in recent years.

henry's faithful hammering of the corridor is a bit naive. he's not bowling badly, he just doesn't have a plan beyond hitting the spot. it works in odis but not on test cricket motorways.

compare him to wagner and southee who have a bag of variations. henry has the talent to succeed, but doesn't really have the bowling variety to be effective on roads atm.

Conservative team selection aside, would worry about the catching. Already seeing with Pakistan what happens when you give the opposition let offs on motorways.

He's gotta go surely. 28W @ 48.17 and a SR of almost 90 after 11 matches. Roads or not, those aren't even numbers we could sustain from a genuine spinner let alone a quick.

Is the weather forecast the only reason people are suggesting England should have a strategy that is different to what New Zealand did last test?

im not saying retain next game, im saying he has the talent but needs to go back to canterbury and develop some variations between odi series.

I'm not adverse to seeing him come back in a few seasons ala Iain O'Brien/Mark Gillespie.

It's a tale as old as time. Wellington journeyman pace bowlers getting really good but not playing anywhere near enough Test cricket.

See Bennett for recent reference.
