None of our batsmen got the chance to get settled as the Pakistani bowlers proved a real handful on Day Two.
And to make matters worse, in form Craig McMillan copped one on the forearm when trying to hook Shabbir Ahmed. In obvious pain, he had to retire hurt. X-rays confirmed the worst - a fracture has invalidated him out of the test series and probably the ODIs also.
Lou Vincent and Shane Bond got us past the follow on mark, but our backs are firmly against the wall in this one! :-O

Lou Vincent got support from a stubborn Shane Bond (22) and Warren McSkimming (18 ) on the third morning and together they put on a further 100 runs to cut the Palistani first innings lead to just 90! :)
Vincent fully deserved a century, but was cruelly stranded on 99no when the final wicket fell. :@

Shane Bond ripped out Umar and Khan in a fiery spell with the new ball, and the Pakistanis were always on the back foot after that.
With all the bowlers doing their part, the Pakistanis go into Day Four with a lead of 260 with the last pair of recognised batsmen at the wicket.
The fourth morning will be a crucial period of play for both sides! 8-)

Our fine bowling performance on the fourth morning in wrapping up the Pakistani second innings was put into perspective when it was our turn to bat again.
With just Jimmy Franklin and the tailenders remaing (remembering we're a batsman short), we'll need to a repeat of our first innings rearguard action if we're to score the 93 further runs required for victory. A very tall order with the pitch as difficult as it is!

Win to Pakistan by 61 runs

Progress was slow on the fifth morning as scoring runs was now difficult on this pitch.
Franklin and Bond were going along nicely until I'r-anjum returned to the bowling crease. In his third over he got through Bond's defence to rattle the wordwork, and then two balls later, McSkimming got a tickle through to the keeper from a ball that moved late.
The match over. Beaten, but not disgraced!

Two changes to our side.
Brendon McCullum comes in to replace the injured McMillan, and relieves Tim Weston from the keeping duties.
As the pitch looks to favour pace and spin equally, Martin replaces McSkimming to add more variety to our attack.
The Pakistani side is unchanged.

Making use of perfect batting conditions, Pakistani opener Taufeeq Umar laid the foundation for a big score with a splendid 152.
The NZ bowlers toiled bravely under the searing sun, but only Shane Bond troubled the home batsman, taking a well deserved 5/58.
We need to mop up the innings quickly tomorrow because a score of 450+ will make it very difficult for us to level the series.

It was Waqar Ahmed's day today as he completed his best batting score in test cricket to help his side through to a big total, and then take three key NZ wickets to initiate a top order collapse.
We were looking comfortable at 109/1, but slumped to 140/7!
Rain saved us from more embarrassment, ending play 40 minutes early, but we're in big trouble, requiring a further 102 runs to avoid the follow on with just three wickets remaining. :-O

Under very cloudy conditions, night watchman Bruce Martin helped Brendon McCullum through to 195 before he became the eighth wicket to fall.
McCullum was then joined by James Franklin, and together they added a record 248 runs for the ninth wicket partnership, both completing their centuries before Franklin went at 443/9!
The innings ended shortly thereafter, but Pakistan go into Day Four with a paltry lead of 24 runs, and if we can dismiss them cheaply, then incredibly we're still in with a chance of winning the test and levelling the series!

A fantastic display of seam bowling took us to the verge of victory today! :)
Franklin started the rot, capturing the first two wickets with the new ball, and then Jacob Oram proved his worth with a personal best 5/27 in tests! :-O
The Pakistanis didn't know what had hit them, and at 103/7, it could have been worse than it was.

Set 190 for victory, we could just have easily suffered the same fate, but Peter Fulton (horribly out of touch in the series to date) and Ross Taylor (trying to prove that we won't miss Stephen Fleming!), batted defiantly through to stumps in an unbeaten century stand that defied the odds of the conditions.
Surely a famous comeback victory looms on Day Five!

NZ win by 10 wickets

A demoralised Pakistani team never really posed a threat on Day Five as Fulton and Taylor cruised through to the win with a magnificent opening partnership!
Who'd have believed we'd win by 10 wickets, having been 140/7 in reply to the Pakistan first innings of 471? :-O
Certainly the most remarkable comeback victory I've ever been involved in.

Test series drawn 1-1

It was important that we bounced back quickly after the disastrous first ODI and we did.
The Pakistanis put together an impressive score that would pose a real challenge for us to chase.
When both our openers were out before the score was 20, the task looked even more improbable.
However, Weston and Sinclair got us back on track with a good third wicket stand, and then Neil Broom played the classiest innings of the game to set up the win. By the time he was gone, the run rate was down to less than 5 per over with not many more to get.

The ODI series now level at 1-1. :)

Again just one change to our side with Jesse Ryder replacing Lou Vincent who has not fired in ODIs for us this season or last despite his great test performances.
Ryder will provide an extra bowling option to give us added flexibilty, and of course we lose nothing in the batting.
No changes to the Pakistani team which has remained constant for the three games to date.

Our preference against this Pakistani side is to bat last if we win the toss. We won this toss.
The Pakistanis made it even harder for us in this game by amassing an impressive 273/6 with opener Taufeeq Umar carrying his bat for an unbeaten century.
Peter Fulton finally got his act together to anchor our chase initially. Upon his departure, Mat Sinclair took over. He found Afridi a handful, but once his bowling spell had finished, he blossomed.
Again victory came in the 47th over.

NZ 2-1 up in the ODI series. :)
