I don't think Vettori will be the vice captain in the test team. I think Oram or Styris are more likely to be the vice. Vettori has never captained ND so I don't think it will happen.

I also have a doubt about Bruce Martin in the team. I don't rate him very highly any more. I think we may see a slow bowler like Matthew Walker in instead of a second spinner.

I don't think they will take McCullum and Nevin in the ODI team.

I agree that Oram is a chance, but Styris? he's not even a test or ODI certainty at the moment, on occassions he's played bloody well but whats happened in between..nothing. Styris has not captained N.D either & considering that Vettori will always be picked I think he has the better chance.

Styris would be one of the first names down on my paper. I think he has a future and #4 or #5 for NZ.. I think he will take the McMillan role and so far the signs are good.

I find it hard to understand why NZ don't pick the best Keeper/Batsman in OD cricket in NZ, Nevin. When he's been picked he's been asked to open and it's not allways come off, so why not put him down to 6 or 7? He has looked a good batsman when I've seen him, and not a bad keeper and just because someone opens doesn't mean they allways have to...

Nevin is an average keeper, he's no better than say Sangakkara is because he's dropped alot of catches behind the stumps.
But I think Nevin should be in the team, probably as a specialist opener. Martin Crowe suggested that Nevin may not come off all the time but he creates a strike-rate for the team to get started with.

Well McCullum seems a weak link in the team with his batting. Fleming is playing so well at the top of the order and I still think that Astle is of more value to the team as an opener.

Nevin only has one shot. Even I could set a feild to him.
Put someone at a wide Third man and he will go for the upper cut. He Always does

Here are the first 8 Academy intake players for 2003:

Simon Allen (Wellington), Neil Broom (Canterbury), Peter Fulton (Canterbury), Bevan Griggs (Central Districts), James Hill (Wellington), Mark Orchard (Northern Districts), Richard Sherlock (Central Districts), Ross Taylor (Central Districts).

I have played against Simon Allen & James Hill..they are really good especially James Hill he averaged 96 at a strike rate of 95 for the NZ U19's in the Provincial 'A' tournament with 484 runs.

Peter Fulton is there which suggests that the NZ Academy thinks that if they can develop him a bit more he'll be a test regular for sure.
Neil Broom & Ross Taylor are two good batsmen & its good to see them picked.

I don't know too much about Richard Sherlock but it says in an article at nzcricket.co.nz that he generates 'impressive pace'.

well O'Connor has announced his retirement from cricket so I guess the seamers will be Bond, Butler, Oram, Tuffey & probably Mason if they feel the need, although 4 should be enough on SL pitches.

I like the looks of Tim's Test side - don't know anything re Bruce Martin, btw what's happened to Chris Martin?????

Re ODI squad - as I said b4 look to the best specialists for the role b4 looking at any bonus skills etc - who is the best opener to partner Fleming, who is the best 'keeper? EG McCullum's batting only becomes an issue if the selection / strategy means he is required to regularly contribute with the bat.

IMO I'd be surprised to see Nevin in the squad even as a specialist opener only. From what I know he is a sort of 'pinch hitter' to boost the run rate and a bit hit & miss re the length of his stay at the crease.

From what I saw at the WC those tactics were put aside for conservation of wickets for 'the death'. Too often NZ's middle & lower order were put under too much pressure to score runs quickly, as a result of being exposed too early because of the inability of the top (esp openers) to make partnerships & create a platform.

IMO they need a 'proper' batsman who specialises in the role & can play his shots as well as value his wicket, not some converted 'lower order' hitter. I think many of the 'lower' order such as McCullum & Oram etc would have fared better with the bat without the extra pressures - hence some rash shot selection.

:)

All we would get for the Aussie one is certian members salivitating over Brett Lee and Michael Clarke...

Last night I was talking to Gavin Larsen at my cricket awards.

He thought the Test team would look like.

Batter Fleming(captain)
Batter McIntosh
Batter Ryder/Nicol
Batter Cumming
Batter Richardson
Batter/(back up keeper) Papps/Vincent
Batter/Keeper Hart (Vice Captain)
Allrounder Oram
Allrounder Styris
Bowler(spin) Vettori
Bowler(spin) Wiseman
Bowler(Pace/Medium) Walker (matthew)
Bowler(pace/Medium) Mason
Bowler(pace) Butler
Bowler(Pace) Bond

A few interesting points:

He thinks that Papps did enough early in the season to show that he can cope at the top level. I find this interesting as I had already crossed Papps out of the picture in my team.

No room for Mills or tuffey in the team . Matthew Walker will play that Chris Harris role(also the role that Larsen used to play)

Hart being Vice-Captain(if they name it). Again interesting here but another good desicion in my eyes. A keeper is in the perfect position.

Wiseman in the Second spinning position. He rates wiseman highly but it is just the point of if Fleming will bowl him.( he thinks fleming should be asked who he wants in this position and who he will bowl)

He also made an interesting point about Mark Richardson. He thinks that maybe in the next season or so they may look to replace him if someone like Jones or Sinclair are scoring runs. I very much doubt this as he has been our most consistant opener for a few year.

Also No room for Sinclair.. He said that he has been given enough chances

He said both are young players and he doesn't think they will take both because SL is not the easiest place to tour and in a place like that you need alot of experience.

He said Ryder may not have played enough but because he was put in the North side then It shows that they are interested.

I think Ryder was picked because last year he scored 190 against the Australian Commonwealth Bank Academy in that Tri-Nations series up in Townsville. Not many batsmen have had the ability to go & plunder a good Australian Youth lineup like that.
He also had a pretty good U19 World Cup, he got a few 50's with a strike-rate of over 100 but didn't kick on.
And in the State Shield he did alright too.

But I think Rob Nicol would be the likely candidate of the two because he now has first class experience & has a good record too.

I like the idea of picking Cumming & maybe they should take Papps because if he can go back to performing like he did at the start of the season he'd be a way better option than Richard Jones or Matt Horne because he's a good keeper aswell.

What do you think of the Auckland Wicketkeeper Reece Young. I have never seen him play but from the results that I see, he must be a talented player.

Tim

Cricketer Of The Year
I've seen him, he's an ok keeper & he really struggled with the bat this season so I don't think he'll be too high up on the selectors list.

Tim

Cricketer Of The Year
Have you seen Young's stats?

33 FC Matches, 441 runs at an avg of 13.78

15 OD Matches, 138 runs at 15.33

Thats not good enough to even make NZ 'A' IMO.
