Probably the best batsman New Zealand has produced, he first toured England in 19.... and headed the batting averages, but no Tests were played. He first played against England during the 19........ MCC tour and in the second Test scored 136 and 80 not out; with ........ he put on 276 for the first wicket-still the New Zealand record first-wicket stand. In 19.... he scored 120 against England at Lord's and his average for the tour was 59.26. He captained New Zealand v South Africa in 19....... and also in two Tests against England in 19....... In his ..... Tests he scored ......... runs for an average of .......
................... then settled in England in 19....

Wisden chose him as one of the Five Cricketers of the Year in 19.... and in 19.... he played for the Gentlemen v Players at Lord's. He represented Scotland on several occasions and after the war played a few games for Warwickshire but soon returned to New Zealand
.
No wonder this question proved so tough.

Dempster NEVER captained New Zealand.

Cricketinfo is wrong. nIUn his first six tests he played under the captaincy of TC Lowry and in the last four under ML Page. He himself was never the captain.

Agree , Cricinfo was wrong in saying he was captain!!

But after several clues everyone was struggling, and several clues were given to help reach the answer!!! :)

So I wouldn't say just that piece of information was making the question difficult !! :D :D
