Both of the lone guns.

The question isn't who is a better bowler but who impacted their teams fortunes more.

I would say Hadlee, purely because Murali had more talented bats to support him. Also because NZ were **** for decades prior to Hadlee. Not such a long time for SL.

Anyway, to answer the question, Murali bowled more and took ore wickets, both per match and overall. He certainly had his flaws, but on a pure impact basis I don't think it's that close between Murali and any other bowler I can think of.

And? Just because we're more familiar with Murali's support on his Sri Lanka teams doesn't mean it's on the whole better than Hadlee's support on his New Zealand teams.

Murali: 133 mat 800 wkts @22.73, 6.02 WPM
His teammates combined: 133 mat 1186 wkts @36.38, 8.91 WPM

Hadlee: 86 mat, 431 wkts @22.3, 5.01 WPM
His teammates combined: 86 mat 776 wkts @37.28, 9.02 WPM

Looks basically equal, great carryjobs by both. Went with Murali for the slightly higher WPM and longevity.

I don't think any of Hadlee support staff were as good or played as long as Vaas. Just saying it's close.

Looks like Hadlee support was shittier than I expected

I think the answer to this question could be mathed out by making up the overs (and additional due to less incisive attack) with a replacement bowler for each of Hadlee and Murali, and seeing how it impacts average runs per innings allowed.

But I can't be bothered right now.

At their peak, WestIndies lost just one test series in 15 years. It was to NewZealand and Richard Hadlee played an important part.

Richard Hadlee took 3-58, 4-75, 5-34, 6-68 and also scored one fifty and a century in that series.

In the last 50 years, NewZealand and Australia have played 13 Test series. The one time they won, it involved Richard Hadlee.

Richard Hadlee in that series :
5-65, 5-65, 6-71, 6-90, 9-52,
111 runs including a fifty
.

From 1970-2020; NewZealand played 24 Tests in India. They have won just one match. Hadlee took 10 wickets in that match.

Just for reference, the top 6 bats in both their teams.

Hadlee 25959 @ 30.79
Murali 50212 @ 41.39

Murali definitely had consistently higher targets to bowl at.
