I presume you have in mind the late cut? Seems to have been the way it was done. From the description:

"The finish of a cut past third-man. M. A. Noble plays the stroke perfectly—very hard and with a notable knack of getting well over the ball. Note the length of the stride across and the full bend at the waist after the stroke. The impetus comes from the wrists, but the arms are allowed to straighten out fully after the ball. A close study of the grip shows that the bat has been almost twisted out of the left hand by the predominating 'drive' of the right wrist."

That CB Fry one is unreal. How great to be able to watch him in colour.

Re: the weird shots, yeah having watched it again none of them are particularly weird, they just look a bit different to the way shots are played now. Now that you've mentioned it though, the late cut does look particularly strange.
